John Lithgow stands six feet three inches tall. That height shaped his first steps on New York stages, since it wasn't always easy to find co-stars who didn't look like miniatures next to him. His father directed Shakespeare festivals, and young John grew up among dressing rooms and classic texts before heading off to Harvard.
In the late 1960s, he won a Fulbright scholarship to study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. There he absorbed the British technique that he would later apply to each of his roles on Broadway. But film took a while to seriously come knocking on his door.
The theater was always his refuge.
In 1973 he won his first Tony Award for The Changing Room. He had only been performing in the play for three weeks when critics were won over by his physical presence. That recognition gave him the freedom to choose projects in a way few actors of his generation could at the time.
Hollywood didn't quite know where to place him until 1982 came along. That year he played Roberta Muldoon in The World According to Garp. She was a trans woman at a time when such roles often fell into parody or ridicule. Lithgow chose restraint and tenderness instead.
He earned his first Oscar nomination, and just a year later repeated the feat with Terms of Endearment in 1983. He is one of the few actors to earn consecutive Academy Award nominations, playing radically opposed characters. But general audiences remember him for the moral extremism of his reverend in Footloose during 1984.
And the gamble paid off.
In the nineties, he decided television was fertile ground for pure comedy. The series 3rd Rock from the Sun premiered in 1996 and aired until 2001. During those five years, Lithgow won three Emmy Awards and proved that his comedic talent was as powerful as his capacity for the darkest drama. So he took a break from big-screen action villains like the one he played in Cliffhanger in 1993.
In 2009, the series Dexter was looking for an antagonist who would be truly frightening. Lithgow accepted the role of Arthur Mitchell, the Trinity Killer. It was a performance that chilled millions of viewers because it hid absolute monstrosity beneath the appearance of a charming grandfather.
No one expected that level of violence.
That role brought him back to the top tier of prestige television. In 2016, he took on the challenge of playing Winston Churchill in the first season of The Crown. For the role, he had to wear prosthetics and change his way of walking, but his performance avoided the historical caricature that other actors had come close to before.
He continued working on large-scale projects such as the film Killers of the Flower Moon in 2023 under the direction of Martin Scorsese. In 2024, he took part in the shoot of Conclave, where he plays a cardinal caught up in Vatican intrigue. But he never stopped writing children's books or recording children's music between shoots.
Over the course of his career he has accumulated six Emmy Awards and two Tony Awards. His contract for the series The Old Man in 2022 required a shooting schedule adapted to his age for the physical action scenes. John Lithgow keeps his primary residence in Los Angeles and has remained an active member of the actors' union for more than fifty years.
