Ben Daniels never needed to be the absolute lead for audiences to be unable to look away from him. His training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art gave him the tools to build characters from silence and restraint.
And the gamble paid off.
By the mid-1990s, his name was already a fixture on the London theater scene. In 1994, he joined the cast of Beautiful Thing, a film that explored sexual identity with unusual openness for its time. The role proved that his slender build and intense gaze were a perfect fit for British independent cinema.
His widespread recognition came from the stage. In 2001, he won the Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in All My Sons by Arthur Miller. That honor confirmed that Daniels was an actor capable of sustaining dramatic tension without relying on artifice.
But television came knocking on his door with force.
For years, he alternated BBC productions with projects in the United States. In 2013, he played Adam Galloway in House of Cards. It was a brief but pivotal role that showcased a cold elegance to millions of viewers on Netflix. That job opened the doors to major Hollywood franchises looking for actors with classical training.
In 2016, he entered the Star Wars universe with Rogue One. He played General Merrick, a Rebel Alliance military commander who dies in the final battle of Scarif. Although his screen time was limited, fans of the saga remembered his face for the authority he projected on the command bridge.
Three years later, he took on the challenge of succeeding Matthew Goode as Lord Snowdon in the third season of The Crown.
His portrayal of Antony Armstrong-Jones showed the wear of a broken marriage under the pressure of the British crown. Daniels studied the real photographer's mannerisms and way of walking to avoid caricature. Critics praised his ability to capture the bitterness of a man who felt overshadowed by the monarchy.
Because Daniels has always known how to move along the margins of history.
In 2021, he joined the cast of Jupiter's Legacy as Walter Sampson. The superhero series did not achieve the expected run and was canceled after a single season due to its modest ratings. Still, this did not slow his pace of work on major fantasy productions.
In 2024, he took on the role of Santiago in the second season of Interview with the Vampire. His presence brought a gothic theatricality that matched the tone of Anne Rice's work. The actor drew on his previous stage experience to give the vampire exaggerated, menacing mannerisms.
That same year, he joined the cast of the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. He played Círdan the Shipwright, one of the oldest and wisest elves in Middle-earth.
Filming this production in the UK involved a massive technical effort, with a production budget that exceeded $© 400 million.
