The Weight of Classical Heritage

Blake Ritson entered Jesus College, Cambridge, to study English and Medieval Literature, never suspecting that his academic training would ultimately shape his on-screen presence. That intellectual foundation allowed him to move with unusual ease through the dense dialogue of period dramas. During his first years in the British industry, he specialized in celebrities who hide a storm beneath a flawless surface.

In 2007, he played Edmund Bertram in the television adaptation of Mansfield Park. The role put him on the radar of casting directors looking for that mix of moral rectitude and emotional fragility. But Ritson didn't want to get stuck as the romantic leading man of Jane Austen novels. And he proved it soon enough.

His classical training shows in every gesture.

In 2009 he appeared in the miniseries Emma, playing Mr. Elton. Here he began to refine his ability to play men whose courtesy is slightly unsettling. Because Ritson understands that danger in fiction is often most effective when it wears formal dress and speaks with perfect diction. So he decided to explore the dark side of that British elegance.

Building the Modern Villain

His massive international breakthrough came with his portrayal of Count Girolamo Riario in the series Da Vinci’s Demons (2013). Over three seasons, he played a religious fanatic who pursued Leonardo with a mix of hatred and intellectual envy. Ritson shot much of the series in Wales under the direction of David S. Goyer, and managed to give a historical comic-book villain real psychological depth.

But his career isn't limited to standing in front of the spotlight. Together with his brother Dylan Ritson, he has written and directed several short films that have screened at international festivals. In 2009, they premiered Love Hate, a brief piece starring Ben Whishaw and Hayley Atwell that explored human obsessions with dry, cutting humor.

Creative control is his true obsession.

His work as a voice actor is perhaps the least known corner of his career, but one of the most lucrative. In 2022 he lent his voice to the video game Elden Ring, playing Margit and Morgott. That voice work reached millions of players around the world, without many knowing that behind those final bosses was the same actor who years earlier had voiced Austen.

Transatlantic projects and directing

In 2022, he joined the cast of The Gilded Age to play Oscar van Rhijn. In this HBO production, he portrays a man who seeks a marriage of convenience to hide his homosexuality in late 19th-century New York. It's a role that demands absolute restraint. But Ritson handles silences with the same precision he brings to the long, complex sentences of Julian Fellowes.

Before shooting each scene, he usually researches the historical context of the costumes to understand how they affected body movement. It isn't a technical whim. It's a way to ensure the character belongs to the century they inhabit and doesn't look like a contemporary actor in costume.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2023, he appeared in the series Count Abdulla, playing a Muslim vampire in a comedy that broke with all his previous roles. The production had a tight budget and was shot entirely on location in the United Kingdom. The series' syndication deal for international distribution was closed for close to three million British pounds before the first episode premiered.
