Hattie Morahan was born in London in 1978, surrounded by scripts and clapperboards. Her father directed the iconic series The Jewel in the Crown, and her mother was a familiar face on British television. But she chose to attend the University of Cambridge before diving into the grind of casting calls.
There she studied English literature and honed her craft in university theater. It was a period of quiet learning. She made her professional debut in 1996 with a minor role in a BBC adaptation directed by her own father. But her true breakthrough would not come until a decade later.
Her training was no whim.
In 2008, the BBC decided to adapt Sense and Sensibility once again, and the challenge was enormous. Morahan took on the role of Elinor Dashwood (a character who requires an apparent coolness charged with inner turmoil). She made audiences forget earlier versions thanks to a surgically precise performance.
That gift for period drama typecast her for a while. But she was looking for something more physical. In 2012, she joined the Young Vic to star in Ibsen's A Doll's House. She won the Evening Standard Award for Best Actress for that role. British critics stopped seeing her as just a period-drama face and began treating her as a force of nature on stage.
That production traveled to New York in 2014.
Theater is where Morahan truly takes risks. She has worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company on several occasions. Her performances are often notable for absolute control of voice and silence. In 2015, she appeared in The Enforce and continued alternating independent productions with big-budget projects.
Commercial film came knocking in 2017 with the live-action version of Beauty and the Beast. She played Agathe (the sorceress who sets the entire plot in motion). It was a brief but essential role for Disney's storytelling. The film's worldwide box office exceeded $1,200 million.
Morahan prefers the grit of quality British television. In 2021, she appeared in Operation Mincemeat alongside Colin Firth. It is a WWII espionage film in which she plays Jean Leslie. Her character is key to the deception the Allies are staging against the Nazis.
She has never chased red carpet fame.
In 2023, she joined the cast of the series Hijack for Apple TV+. She plays Louise (a British minister facing a real-time aviation security crisis). The series moves at a frantic pace, and she brings the calm, bureaucratic composure it needs. In 2024, she appeared in Netflix's adaptation of Fool Me Once, based on the novel by Harlan Coben.
Fool Me Once was filmed mainly in Manchester and the northwest of England in 2023.
