Raquel Cassidy did not plan to become an actress while studying Biological Anthropology at the University of Cambridge. She had a set academic path, but university theater crossed her life by accident. She left the libraries for London stages in the mid-nineties.
It was an impulsive decision that her parents took a while to come to terms with.
That turn led her to hone her craft in modest theater productions before breaking into British television. In 2001, she landed the role of Mel in the series Teachers. That Channel 4 production served as a talent incubator for a generation of performers who wanted to move away from the polish of the BBC.
Cassidy brought a dry cynicism that moved away from the female stereotypes of the era. And she did it without breaking a sweat. In early-2000s television, the goal wasn't aesthetic perfection but the uncomfortable truth of the characters.
The year 2013 marked a turning point in her international profile when she joined the cast of Downton Abbey. Playing Phyllis Baxter required complete restraint and a gaze loaded with secrets. She wasn't the noisiest character belowstairs, but her storyline of redemption in the face of blackmail kept millions of viewers on edge over three seasons.
The actress drew on her Spanish roots to add depth to the character in the moments of greatest isolation. Her mother is Spanish, and that bilingualism has allowed her to maintain a distinct emotional connection to European acting. But the success of the series did not confine her to period dramas.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2017, she took on the challenge of playing Miss Hardbroom in the new version of The Worst Witch. It was a complete change of register toward a young audience, where the rigidity of her body language became her greatest tool. She worked on this production until 2020, while juggling other projects aimed at a more adult audience.
Cassidy belongs to that breed of actresses who carry scenes from the supporting ranks. In 2019, she reprised her role as Baxter in the first Downton Abbey movie, and repeated the experience in 2022 with the sequel A New Era. Shoots in Victorian castles alternated with short roles in police dramas, where her presence brought immediate authority.
Unlike many of her generation, she prefers the discretion of the craft. She doesn't frequent celebrity circles or seek the spotlight on red carpets outside of promotional contracts. In 2021, she appeared in the series The Canterville Ghost, playing Eleanor Canterville.
In 2024, she starred in the film Ferryman under the direction of Darren Strowger. The film's budget was managed independently of the major studios in London.
