Synopsis of Downton Abbey

Set in 1912, Downton Abbey is an estate in Yorkshire, England, and home to the Crawley family. Robert, Earl of Grantham, married Cora, an American heiress whose fortune was tied to the estate's entail, but the couple have only three daughters. Under the inheritance rules, the title and the property can pass only to a male heir, and that arrangement shapes life at the house. Everything changes when the heir presumptive dies in the sinking of the Titanic. The new heir is Matthew Crawley, a young upper-middle-class lawyer and a distant cousin of the Earl, who arrives at Downton with his mother. The series follows the Crawleys and their servants in the years after the Edwardian era. Created by Julian Fellowes and broadcast on ITV, it stars Hugh Bonneville, Maggie Smith and Michelle Dockery in the main cast.

Trivia about Downton Abbey

Highclere Castle, in north Hampshire, is used for the series' exterior shots and for nearly all of the interior filming.
The first season cost about two million pounds per episode, making it the most expensive British series produced up to that point.
The series was conceived as a spin-off of Gosford Park but ended up being developed as an independent production inspired by the film, set decades earlier.
The first episode drew a consolidated audience of 9.2 million viewers in the United Kingdom, with a 32% share.
The first season's Metacritic score averaged 91 and earned it a Guinness World Record of 2011 for the highest critic ratings for a television series.
The third spin-off film, «Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale», hit theaters on September 12, 2025 and reunited Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern and Michelle Dockery.
«Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale» added Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale and Arty Froushan to the cast, with Simon Curtis directing and Julian Fellowes writing the script.
The movie franchise concluded with «Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale», billed as the final chapter for the characters from the original series, bringing back several of the lead actors.
