Synopsis of Law & Order

New York is the setting for this police and legal drama created by Dick Wolf and aired on NBC. Each episode is split into two halves. In the first, homicide detectives from the local police department, such as Sergeant Max Greevey and Detective Mike Logan, follow the leads in a violent crime until they arrest a suspect. In the second, Manhattan district attorneys prepare the charges and take the case to court. Some search for the truth on the streets while others prove it in the courtroom, and both want the culprit to answer to justice. The series moves case by case and rarely dwells on its protagonists' personal lives.

Trivia about Law & Order

Dick Wolf came up with the concept in 1988 with the intention of portraying a relatively optimistic view of the American criminal justice system.
Kerry McCluggage, then president of Universal Television, pointed out its resemblance to Arrest and Trial, a 1963 series that lasted one season.
Fox initially ordered 13 episodes based on the concept alone, without a pilot, but then-network chief Barry Diller reversed the decision.
NBC executives believed the innovative show could appeal to a broad audience and ended up ordering a full season.
The music was composed by Mike Post, who deliberately kept it minimal to fit the show's clipped style.
The transition sound between scenes is actually a mix of "six or seven" sounds, including that of 500 Japanese men walking on a wooden floor.
In 2004, a street leading to Pier 62 at Chelsea Piers, where most of the series was filmed, was renamed "Law & Order Way" in its honor.
Angie Harmon auditioned alongside 85 other women, including Vanessa Williams, and was chosen after Wolf heard her Texan accent.
