Synopsis of Frasier

Psychiatrist Frasier Crane, played by Kelsey Grammer, leaves Boston after his divorce and returns to Seattle, his hometown, to start a single life. His plan is to host a radio show on KACL, which broadcasts across the entire state of Washington. But his plans fall apart when he has to take in his father, Martin, a retired Seattle police detective who cannot take care of himself after being shot. Frasier, who has little in common with his father, tries to adjust to a living arrangement that makes him uncomfortable. Together with Martin, he looks for a caregiver to live with them, and the father insists on hiring an English woman. The series, created by David Angell, Peter Casey, and David Lee, airs on NBC and is a spin-off of Cheers.

Trivia about Frasier

The series and its cast won thirty-seven Primetime Emmy Awards, a record at the time for a series with a writing category.

Martin's character was based on the father of creator Casey, who spent 34 years with the San Francisco Police Department.

Warren Littlefield, of NBC, suggested that Martin's nurse be English rather than Hispanic and proposed Jane Leeves for the role.

Sheila Guthrie, assistant casting director on Wings, brought the producers a photo of Pierce and recommended him if they wanted a brother for Frasier.

Grammer is the only actor nominated for an Emmy for playing the same role in three different series, thanks to Cheers, Wings, and Frasier.

Grammer used an acting method he called "required disrespect" and did not rehearse with the other actors; instead, he studied his lines just before filming each scene.

David Angell died along with his wife Lynn in the September 11, 2001 attacks; both were on American Airlines Flight 11, which briefly interrupted filming of the series.

The writers set the series in Seattle to move it away from Boston and to keep the characters from "Cheers" from easily showing up.
