Jane Leeves wasn't chasing Hollywood spotlights when she started studying dance in London. Her plan was to live on her toes, but an ankle injury shattered that possibility before she turned twenty. That accident forced a change of direction that took her to New York with barely a thousand dollars in her pocket.
She survived on modeling jobs and small roles in British productions. In 1983, she appeared as one of the Angels in The Benny Hill Show, an experience she always remembered as a simple way to pay the rent. There was no mystique in her early days, just the need to get paid.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1985, she landed a small role in the film To Live and Die in L.A., directed by William Friedkin. It was her first serious contact with the American film industry. But the real turning point came on television, when she joined the cast of Murphy Brown in 1988 to play Audrey Cohen.
When the producers of Frasier were looking for a woman to play Daphne Moon in 1993, Leeves decided to take a chance. She is originally from Essex, but for the casting she exaggerated a Manchester accent that convinced the show's producers. That decision defined her professional life over the following eleven seasons.
Her chemistry with David Hyde Pierce was key to the sitcom's success. The sexual tension between their characters carried much of the secondary storylines for years. Audiences connected with the mix of naivety and insight Leeves brought to Martin Crane's physical therapist.
In the later seasons of the series, her salary reached astronomical figures. Leeves earned **400,000 dollars per episode** recorded. That contract made her the highest-paid British actress on television worldwide during that period.
But massive success often brings typecasting.
After the end of Frasier in 2004, the actress stepped away from the spotlight to focus on her family and voice-over work. She took part in animated films such as James and the Giant Peach and lent her voice to series such as Phineas and Ferb. She was in no hurry to return to the front lines.
In 2010, she returned to the sitcom format with Hot in Cleveland. The show ran for six seasons and let her work shoulder to shoulder with Betty White. It was a project that proved her ability to keep the comedic rhythm in front of a live audience, something few actors master with her precision.
She took on the challenge of medical drama in 2018.
She joined the cast of The Resident playing Dr. Kit Voss, an orthopedic surgeon with unquestionable authority. Filming for the series ran until 2023, the year Fox announced its final cancellation after six seasons on air. Leeves shot a total of 71 episodes of this hospital drama.
The actress has lived in Los Angeles for decades with her husband, executive Marshall Coben. Her estimated net worth exceeds **$16 million** according to industry financial records in California. The final day of filming on her contract with 20th Television wrapped on the Atlanta set in the spring of 2023.
