The face everyone knows but few can name

Gary Cole is the actor who shows up in your favorite show just when the script needs a jolt of authority. In 1983, he began honing his craft at the legendary Steppenwolf company in Chicago. There he learned that acting isn't about showing off but about holding the scene so the whole ensemble works.

His arrival on national television came in 1984 with the miniseries Fatal Vision. He didn't need years of auditions to convince producers that his cold stare fit the crime drama perfectly. But the general public took a little longer to remember his face.

And then came late-night radio.

Between 1988 and 1991, he starred in Midnight Caller as Jack Killian. It was his first real taste of mass fame in the United States. The show worked because Cole brought a mix of cynicism and empathy that felt very human for its time.

From Office Manager to America's Dad

In 1995, he took on the challenge of playing Mike Brady in The Brady Bunch Movie. It was a risky parody, since he had to imitate a 1970s acting style without descending into total absurdity. He managed to make the character funny and strangely respectful of the original material.

But the moment that defined his status in pop culture came in 1999. Mike Judge cast him as Bill Lumbergh in Office Space. No one expected a box-office flop to bring him immortality.

The Lumbergh character became a viral phenomenon years later thanks to the internet and that coffee mug he never let go of. Cole built a passive-aggressive corporate villain that still shows up in thousands of online memes today. It's the perfect example of how a supporting role can steal an entire movie.

Comedy came easily to him because his serious face made the jokes hit harder.

In 2006, he appeared in Talladega Nights alongside Will Ferrell. He played an absent, alcoholic father who delivered absurd lines with absolute solemnity. That's his great trick. He acts in the wildest comedies as if he were performing in a Shakespeare play.

The mathematical precision of the supporting player

The pace of television work doesn't forgive mistakes.

In 2013, he joined the cast of Veep to play Kent Davison. The character was a data- and statistics-obsessed strategist who barely showed any emotion. Cole was nominated for an Emmy in 2014 for this role, where he proved he can be hilarious without moving a single facial muscle.

He balanced that political coolness with his role in The Good Wife and later in The Good Fight. There, he played Kurt McVeigh, a conservative ballistics expert. His chemistry with Christine Baranski worked so well that the writers kept his storyline going for more than a decade.

But his greatest professional challenge was still ahead in 2021.

After Mark Harmon left NCIS, the production team needed a veteran who could carry the weight of a multibillion-dollar franchise. Cole came in to play Alden Parker. He didn't try to imitate his predecessor (which would have been professional suicide), but instead brought a more tech-savvy and less authoritarian style.

In 2023, his voice continued to be heard in animation with projects such as Family Guy and Velma. He is an actor who puts in long hours with the precision of a Swiss watchmaker. He isn't chasing magazine covers or the big headlines of the gossip press.

His contract for season 2024 of NCIS guarantees his presence on television for one more year. CBS ratings confirmed that the show averaged seven million viewers per episode after he joined the main cast.
