Jane Lynch stands six foot three and doesn't need to shout to dominate a room. Before the Hollywood spotlights, she spent years on Chicago stages sharpening the art of the quick comeback with The Second City. There she learned that comedy isn't about telling jokes but about keeping a straight face while everything around you falls apart.
In 2000, her career took a turn when Christopher Guest cast her in Best in Show. The shoot relied almost entirely on the actors' ability to improvise dialogue on the spot. Lynch played a dog groomer with crushing confidence and a total lack of self-awareness.
And the gamble paid off.
From that point on, the industry stopped seeing her as a filler supporting player and started considering her a specialist in authoritative characters. In 2003, she reunited with Guest for A Mighty Wind, and in 2005 she appeared in The 40-Year-Old Virgin. In that film, she improvised a suggestive song that left Steve Carell speechless during the take.
Her massive breakthrough came in 2009 with the premiere of Glee. The role of Sue Sylvester was designed to be a cartoonish villain at an Ohio high school. Lynch chose to play her with a military coldness that earned her the Emmy Award in 2010 and the Golden Globe that same year.
Throughout the six seasons the show ran, the actress wore more than a hundred tracksuits in different colors. Her contract included a steadily rising salary that placed her among the highest-paid women in cable television during that period. But fame did not change her work pace in other, less commercial projects.
Television gave her the money, and film gave her the respect.
In 2012, she lent her voice to the animated film Wreck-It Ralph, playing Sergeant Calhoun. Disney's technical team recorded her facial expressions to carry her hard-edged demeanor into the digital character. Lynch has a jaw that seems sculpted for giving orders in any storyworld.
In 2017, she joined the cast of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel to bring Sophie Lennon to life. The character was a poisoned dart aimed at the fifties comedy stars who pretended to be humble in front of the public while living in palaces. For this role, she won another Emmy in 2019 after a nearly unanimous vote from the Academy.
In 2021 she joined Only Murders in the Building as Sazz Pataki. Her role was to be the action double of Steve Martin, and the chemistry between the two actors recalled the best moments of classic American comedy. She won her fifth Emmy Award thanks to this collaboration in 2022.
She has never given up musical theater or live performances.
In 2023, she wrapped her contract with the production of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel after filming a total of twenty episodes. Her final scene was shot in a single fourteen-hour day on a New York soundstage. The production spent $12,000 on the apartment set for her character in that final sequence alone.
