Kurt Fuller has one of those faces viewers recognize before they've finished blinking. In 1989 he played Jack Hardemeyer in Ghostbusters II, and from that point on he specialized in despicable guys, nervous bureaucrats, or bosses with ulterior motives. He wasn't after stardom, but he found something far more valuable for a character actor: ubiquity.
He was born in 1953 in the San Joaquin Valley. Before stepping onto a set, he worked in real estate, because experimental theater in Berkeley didn't pay the electricity bills. That real-world experience gave him a grounded normalcy that he would later bring to the screen, playing middle-class men trapped in absurd situations.
No one plays a man on the verge of a nervous breakdown better.
In 1987 he appeared in The Running Man alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger. It kicked off a streak in which he took on project after project in an industry that was starting to demand supporting actors with bite. But his big commercial break came with Wayne’s World in 1992, directed by Penelope Spheeris. There he brought Russell Finley to life and set the standard for the unscrupulous TV executive that would be repeated again and again throughout the 1990s.
Fuller realized early on that big studio films could be fickle and cruel to supporting actors. So he moved into television with remarkable ease to secure his place in the industry. In 2009, he joined the cast of Psych as the coroner Woody Strode, and this role changed how casting directors saw his comedic range.
His dry humor became his best professional tool.
Between 2011 and 2015, he appeared in The Good Wife, playing Judge Peter Dunaway. He didn't need big monologues to steal scenes from the leads. All he needed was a slight adjustment of his glasses and a look of total disapproval from the bench. Fuller is, above all, a working actor who understands that silence speaks louder than a shout in a fictional courtroom.
In 2011 he shot Midnight in Paris under the direction of Woody Allen. He played the father of Rachel McAdams and brought the stiff, Republican rigidity that the story's comedic contrast needed. And although critics often overlook actors who make everything look effortless, his presence on set became a guarantee of technical reliability for independent production companies.
In 2019 he began his run on the series Evil as Dr. Kurt Boggs. Across the seasons filmed through 2024, he played a skeptical psychiatrist who served as the rational anchor against the supernatural elements of the script. His ability to stay composed while the plot spiraled out of control was one of the keys to the show's tone.
Craft always wins out over fleeting fame.
In 2024, the series Evil aired its final episode on Paramount+ after five years of nonstop filming. By then, the actor had more than two hundred professional credits on his personal profile. Fuller still lives in Los Angeles, where he keeps receiving scripts looking for that irritating touch of authority that only he can pull off effortlessly.
