French Stewart never wanted to be the center of attention, but an accidental facial expression made him one. Born in Albuquerque in 1964 under the name Milton French Stewart, his career was built on an almost rubber-like talent for physical comedy. He studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and spent his first professional years performing on regional theater stages, never imagining that his bank account would change dramatically in the mid-1990s.
In 1996, he first played Harry Solomon in the series 3rd Rock from the Sun (3rd Rock from the Sun). That character lived in a state of constant confusion and kept his eyes half-closed, as if trying to read invisible fine print. Stewart came up with this physical trait on the spot during the casting and kept up that muscular effort for 139 episodes. The success was so massive that the actor had to insure his eyes against the possibility of real facial paralysis from the strain of the expression.
And the public bought the joke.
But television fame at the end of the century was a double-edged trap. Stewart was earning six-figure paychecks while sharing the screen with John Lithgow, but the industry began to see him only as a comic relief actor with unusual features. In 1999, he tried to bring that appeal to film with Inspector Gadget, and later starred in the direct-to-video sequel Inspector Gadget 2 in 2003. Critics showed him no mercy because they expected an exact copy of his TV character in every new project.
Television is a cruel business for faces tied to a single hit.
After his big series ended in 2001, leading roles disappeared. Stewart didn't sink into obscurity, but he had to accept a different reality built on supporting roles and guest spots on procedural series. He appeared in Murder, She Wrote and Bones, showing he could act without relying on facial grimaces. The money he earned during his glory years allowed him to be selective and focus on theater in the Los Angeles scene, where he founded his own company.
In 2013, he found a stable new home on the series Mom. He played Chef Rudy, a self-destructive character that let him move away from the image of the scatterbrained alien. He worked on this CBS production on a recurring basis until 2019, and regained the respect of casting directors who were only looking for actors with natural range. The industry often punishes those who become too famous for a single gesture, but Stewart managed his career well enough not to depend on the approval of major studios.
His personal life stayed out of the tabloids after his marriage to actress Vanessa Claire Smith in 2011. Together, they focused on small-scale theater projects and raising their daughter, born in 2013. Stewart now prefers short shoots and guest appearances that let him stay busy without the pressure of carrying a multimillion-dollar franchise on his shoulders.
In 2024, he appeared in the horror film The Home, directed by James DeMonaco. The budget for this production was far from the standards of major Hollywood blockbusters, and filming was completed in just six weeks of intense work on closed sets.
