Harriet Sansom Harris never needed to be the lead to dominate the scene.
She was born in Fort Worth in 1955 and arrived at the prestigious Juilliard School at just seventeen. She was part of the 6 Group in the drama division, where she shared a classroom with a young Kelsey Grammer. That chance encounter in the halls of New York would shape her television career for decades to come.
In 1993, she first appeared in the comedy Frasier. Her character was Bebe Glazer, an amoral, manipulative literary agent with a theatrical addiction to cigarettes. The writers designed the role for a single appearance, but audience reaction forced producers to bring her back for eleven seasons.
Nobody smoked on screen quite like her.
Because her presence guaranteed a level of sharpness the script alone couldn't achieve, the character of Bebe Glazer went from a secondary device to a fundamental piece of the plot.
And the gamble paid off.
Before becoming famous on television, she worked extensively in regional theater. In 2002, she earned the industry's definitive recognition, winning the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her role in Thoroughly Modern Millie.
She played Mrs. Meers, an eccentric villain who faked a forced accent (a parody of the stereotypes of the era) to hide her crimes. That role showed that her strength lies in physical comedy and absolute control of her voice.
In 2005, she joined the cast of Desperate Housewives. She played Felicia Tilman. Her character sought revenge for her sister's death and was the series' most unsettling antagonist. Harris avoided the cliché of the crazy neighborhood woman. She opted for an icy coldness that made viewers uncomfortable.
She signed a contract for a few episodes that turned into two seasons of constant tension.
In 2020, she switched gears for the miniseries Atlantic Crossing, playing Eleanor Roosevelt. It was a restrained performance, free of the scenery-chewing that often surrounds historical figures on television.
But the humor always comes back.
In 2022, she appeared in the second season of Hacks, playing Susan, a former comedian who left the stage to live a quiet life far from the spotlight of Las Vegas. The scene where she reunites with her old rival is a masterclass in comic timing. In 2024, she joined the cast of the horror film It’s What’s Inside.
She lives in New York and keeps her private life away from the media spotlight. In 2023, the film Magazine Dreams, in which she took part, received a rating of 72 on Metacritic.
