Robby Benson made his Broadway debut at just five years old in a production of The King and I. Back then, he was still going by Robin David Segal. But his stage name soon followed, and with it came one of the most recognizable faces in American cinema of the 1970s. His clean gaze and sensitive-boy charm set him apart from the tough guys who dominated the screen at the time.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1973, he starred in Jeremy, and critics took notice of his natural screen presence. But Benson wanted more than just acting in front of the camera. In 1977, he convinced producers to make One on One, a basketball movie he had written based on his own high school experiences. The film grossed 18 million dollars on a minimal budget, proving he had a good head for business.
That film was a hit because Benson understood what young audiences wanted at neighborhood movie theaters. But the industry is fickle, and the 1980s were not kind to his image as the eternal teenager. He took part in projects that went largely unnoticed, and his name began to lose its pull on the posters of major Los Angeles productions.
By the end of that decade, his box-office pull as a leading man had hit rock bottom. Romantic lead roles no longer suited him, and the phone rang far less often than usual. But in 1991, Disney was looking for something very specific for its new animated project. They wanted a voice that could shift from pure fury to the most tender vulnerability in a single second.
Benson recorded his audition on a cheap cassette tape at home.
When the directors of Beauty and the Beast heard that roar turned into a whisper, they knew it was him. The film was a massive hit and changed how the industry viewed his vocal talent. The movie grossed 425 million dollars worldwide and gave him a second career far from the red carpet spotlight. From there, he focused on directing for television.
Because Benson discovered he was good at leading on set. During the 1990s, he became one of the most reliable directors in the American television industry. He directed episodes of Friends, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Ellen. It was fast, technical work that gave him financial stability without the pressure of being the star of the show.
But his body forced him to hit the brakes hard on several occasions. Benson was born with a defect in his aortic valve that has led him to undergo surgery repeatedly. His first major operation was in 1984, and it shaped the way he approached his work in Hollywood. In 2012, he published his memoir, I’m Not Dead… Yet!, in which he describes with striking honesty what it means to face death.
Benson has survived four open-heart surgeries.
In 2019, he appeared in the TV movie A Feeling of Home. For years, his main focus has been university teaching. He has taught film classes at New York University and Indiana University, where he shares his tips on editing rhythm and directing actors. In 2023, he concentrated on his music composition and independent screenwriting projects at his private studio.
The medical team that operated on him most recently used a bovine tissue valve to replace his own.
