The One-Take Shot That Took Over Sundance

Jim Cummings premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2016 with a short film shot in a single take on a ridiculously small budget. The twelve-minute piece, titled Thunder Road, followed an emotionally broken cop trying to dance to a Bruce Springsteen song at his mother's funeral. It was a raw, powerful hit.

The short film won the Grand Jury Prize and went viral on independent film digital platforms. But the success didn't bring the million-dollar contracts young directors typically expect in the United States. Cummings found that the traditional industry didn't know what to do with his mix of dark comedy and pathetic drama.

In 2018, he decided he wouldn't wait for anyone to shoot the full-length version. He sold his belongings and launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise the $190,000 needed to produce the feature film of the same name. It was a risky move that tested his mental health and his savings.

And the gamble paid off.

Thunder Road became a box-office success after winning at SXSW. Cummings not only directed and wrote the film. He also starred in it and handled digital distribution himself, personally visiting movie theaters to make sure the film reached audiences without middlemen.

Absolute Control of Production

In 2020, he premiered The Wolf of Snow Hollow with a slightly bigger budget but kept his frantic shooting style. This time he blended horror with a study of mediocre male characters. It was his first foray into pure genre cinema, with werewolves involved.

For Cummings, filmmaking is a matter of logistics and sweat. He often shoots extremely long sequences without cuts so that actors maintain emotional tension. But this method requires meticulous technical planning, which he personally supervises from the screenplay stage.

In 2021, he released The Beta Test after months of researching how talent agencies really operate in Hollywood. The film is a violent satire about industry hypocrisy and online harassment. To fund it, he once again used crowdfunding and turned down studio offers that demanded changes to the final cut.

It was a commercial suicide.

But the film recouped its investment in just a few months thanks to streaming platform licensing rights. Cummings argues that a director must also be an efficient accountant if they want to keep their creative freedom. That's why he posts his spreadsheets and budgets on social media to help other up-and-coming filmmakers.

Acting and Technical Projects

In 2023, he appeared as an actor in Oppenheimer under the direction of Christopher Nolan. It was a small but meaningful role that gave him a firsthand look at how a $100 million blockbuster works from the inside. That experience did not change the way he approaches his own low-budget projects.

That same year, he joined the cast of The Last Stop in Yuma County. In this crime thriller, he once again played a character on the verge of a nervous breakdown. It's a register he masters with precision because he understands the frustration of the American middle class better than most screenwriters of his generation.

Cummings rejects unnecessary digital effects and prefers to invest the money in extra rehearsal days. On his sets, time is the most valuable resource. And he makes the most of it by eliminating the traditional hierarchies that tend to slow down major studio productions.

In 2024, his independent production company kept an expense log that prioritized paying crew members directly over marketing campaigns. The total cost of his sound team on the last shoot did not exceed $12,000.
