Rob Paulsen didn't start out in front of a microphone surrounded by scripts and pop filters. In 1983, he appeared in the horror film Eyes of Fire and picked up minor parts in shows like St. Elsewhere. But the financial realities of Los Angeles ruled the day, and Paulsen quickly realized his voice was more marketable than his face.
The industry didn't expect a live-action supporting actor to have that range.
In 1987, he landed the role of Raphael in the original series of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. That job taught him the mechanics of television animation before the genre exploded the following decade. He wasn't chasing fame in front of the camera; he preferred the freedom of voicing five different characters in a single recording morning.
That contract from the late eighties guaranteed him a place in the Burbank studios for the next three decades. But the real change of pace came when Steven Spielberg decided to produce animated series with a much sharper, more cynical humor.
In 1993, the series Animaniacs changed the rules of the game for original voice actors. Paulsen took on the role of Yakko Warner and showed an almost athletic ability to sing endless lists of countries or scientific concepts at breakneck speed. He won an Emmy Award in 1999 for his performance in Pinky and the Brain, where he brought Pinky to life.
And the gamble paid off.
His working method has always been technical and far from the showy theatrics of the Method. In 1995, he took part in recording sessions where the rest of the cast fed off his rhythmic energy. He worked on Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, voicing Carl Wheezer, and on The Fairly OddParents under the direction of Butch Hartman.
Many of his colleagues point out that Paulsen never needed more than five minutes to warm up his voice before a four-hour session. That made him the most reliable voice talent in California for studios looking to save time in the recording booth.
Paulsen's career came to an abrupt halt for medical reasons. In 2016, he was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the throat. It was a direct blow to his work tool and his main source of income. He underwent aggressive radiation and chemotherapy treatment that caused him to lose 22 kilos in just a few months.
Silence was his greatest enemy for months.
Doctors didn't guarantee that he would be able to work with the same vocal flexibility he had before. But in 2020, he returned for the Hulu-produced revival of Animaniacs. In this new chapter, he picked up his role as Yakko Warner at sixty-four, proving that his vocal cords had survived the scars of cancer treatment.
Starting in 2021, he focused more on voice direction and training new talent for the industry. He published his memoir, Voice Lessons, which details the technical process of recovering his voice after cancer. The book focuses on the biomechanics of speech and avoids the sentimentality typical of Hollywood biographies.
In 2023, production wrapped on the third season of the Warner Brothers revival after 36 additional episodes were recorded. His official record lists more than 250 different characters across over 1000 animated productions since he left live-action work in the 1980s.
