Grey DeLisle didn't start in front of a condenser microphone in a climate-controlled studio in Burbank. Her story begins in Fort Ord, California, under the direct influence of her grandmother, salsa singer Eva Flores. From her, she learned that the voice is an instrument that can be shaped to its limits. But before lending her voice to hundreds of animated characters, DeLisle tried her luck on the live comedy circuit.
She did impressions at nightclubs while working jobs that had nothing to do with show business. That stretch of struggle and dive-bar stages gave her the timing she needed to understand comedy. Because voice acting in the United States isn't just about making weird voices. It's about nailing comedic timing down to fractions of a second.
Then came the opportunity of her life.
In 1994, she landed her first major role on the series Rugrats. She wasn't the lead, but it helped casting directors take notice of a performer who could shift from sweet to terrifying without missing a beat. From there, her name began circulating around the offices of Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network as a safe bet for long-running projects.
The year 2001 was the definitive turning point for her bank account and her professional reputation. After the death of Mary Kay Bergman, the producers of the Scooby-Doo franchise were looking for a new voice for Daphne Blake. DeLisle auditioned with little hope. But her ability to keep the character's essence while adding a touch of contemporary strength convinced the producers immediately.
She has been voicing the detective from the mystery van for more than two decades. That's an unusually long run in an industry that tends to burn through voices every five years. But DeLisle didn't settle for being the pretty girl of the group. In 2005, she took on the role of Princess Azula in Avatar: The Last Airbender, a radically different role that put her on the map as one of television's great villains.
Azula's cruelty didn't come from yelling, but from a tense calm that made your skin crawl.
That capacity for contained cruelty came through again in The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, where she brought Mandy to life. The contrast between the sweetness of her early work and the complete coldness of this unscrupulous little girl made it clear her range had no ceiling. In the industry, people say she can record three separate sessions in a single morning without one voice bleeding into the next.
Outside of animation studios, Grey DeLisle returns to her married name for her career as a singer-songwriter. Her music has nothing to do with cartoons. It lives in the realm of Americana, folk and gothic country. In 2004, she released The Graceful Ghost, an album that received positive reviews for its honesty and raw sound, far removed from the commercial productions of Los Angeles.
Writing songs is her way of venting the stress of marathon dubbing sessions. Her lyrics address loss, her three divorces and the challenge of raising her children while maintaining a high-profile career. But she doesn't mix the two worlds. At her concerts she barely mentions her television work, preferring that audiences connect with her more vulnerable, down-to-earth side.
The work never stops.
In 2016, she joined the cast of The Loud House to voice Lola, Lana and Lily Loud. That means three lead characters with opposite personalities in the same series. This workload calls for impeccable vocal technique to avoid permanent damage to the vocal cords. DeLisle uses bel canto techniques to protect her work tool during screaming sessions or guttural sound effects.
In 2024, she worked on the production of Batman: Caped Crusader and kept her presence in multiple video games from the Mortal Kombat franchise. In the year 2023 alone, she took part in more than fifteen different projects, including series, direct-to-video films and console downloadable content. Her profile in specialized databases lists over 600 official credits as a voice actress.
