Eric Bauza didn't start his career in front of a condenser microphone in a Los Angeles studio. His first contact with the industry came through pencil and paper as a character artist in Toronto. He worked on background design and scene composition before anyone knew he could imitate a rodent or a furious duck.
And the change wasn't planned.
During recording sessions at the animation studios, producers needed temporary voices to adjust the pacing of scenes. Bauza offered to fill those gaps with impressions that ended up being better than those of the contracted actors. His ability to replicate vocal textures pulled him off the drawing board for good.
In 2009, he voiced Stimpy in Ren and Stimpy Adult Party Cartoon, which put his name on casting directors' radar. But his real trial by fire came with the Warner Bros. legacy.
Inheriting the characters of Looney Tunes is a professional risk if you don't have the right technique. Bauza took on the challenge of voicing Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck in the series Looney Tunes Cartoons, produced in 2020. He was not after a flat imitation of what was done in the eighties. He studied the original recordings from the 1940s to recover the nasal tone and the original comedic aggressiveness.
He won the Emmy Award in 2022 for this work.
He was the first actor of Filipino descent to voice these global characters. His rise coincided with a period of transformation in animation, where vocal precision is valued above the name of whatever movie star is in vogue. In 2021, he took part in Space Jam: A New Legacy, voicing several main and supporting characters at the same time.
Because the secret of his success isn't parody but sound archaeology.
Bauza's work isn't limited to classic Saturday morning comedy. In 2023, he played Toad in The Super Mario Bros. Movie under enormous commercial pressure. The film's box office success topped 1,300 million dollars and confirmed that his vocal range could carry big-budget blockbusters.
But the industry is fickle.
The movie Coyote vs. Acme, recorded in 2023, became a symbol of the industry's volatility when Warner Bros. decided not to release it for tax reasons. Bauza had already completed his voice sessions for the project. The final audio file remains stored on the company's servers with no scheduled release date.
