Kimberly Brooks doesn't need to be recognized on the street.
All she needs is for millions of people to have heard her voice through a console controller or in front of the TV. Her name has appeared in the credits of the biggest entertainment franchises since the late '90s. She started out voicing supporting characters in Dexter's Laboratory and ended up as the voice of a space princess in Voltron: Legendary Defender.
And he did it without making a media splash.
Her career took off in 1996 when she appeared in The Spooktacular New Adventures of Casper. At that time, the animation industry was looking for voices that didn't sound like classic cartoons. Brooks fit the bill because she brought a naturalistic texture that worked for both the comedy and the dark drama of the video games that were coming.
Before her big contracts, she worked on shows such as ¡Mucha Lucha! between 2002 and 2005. There she played Buena Girl and proved she could carry an entire production with her vocal cords alone. But the real jump in scale came in the recording booths of software development studios.
In 2007, the video game industry changed forever with the release of Mass Effect. Brooks voiced Ashley Williams, a soldier with a complicated family background and political views that sparked debate among players around the world. She was one of the first virtual characters to feel real, thanks to a performance that avoided the clichés of flat heroism.
Two years later she stepped into the role of Barbara Gordon in Batman: Arkham Asylum. Her performance as Oracle was consistent throughout Rocksteady Studios' trilogy. Brooks didn't yell or overact, because she understood that the character was Batman's technological brain. That restraint gave her an authority that few voice actors manage to convey.
The gamble paid off.
Because Brooks understands that voice acting is not just about talking. In 2011 she took part in Saints Row: The Third, and in 2013 she played Batgirl in Injustice: Gods Among Us. Her ability to work on big-budget projects made her a regular on casting directors' lists in California.
Voice work is often considered a minor art compared with acting on camera. Brooks broke that idea in 2021 with her role in Psychonauts 2. She played Hollis Forsythe, and the result was so solid that the British Academy of Film and Television Arts took notice of her.
In 2022 she won the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress.
This award was not a gift for her career but a recognition of a technique refined over decades. In 2021 she also joined the Star Wars universe, voicing various characters in Star Wars: The Bad Batch. Her range lets her move from the aggressive edge of Jasper in Steven Universe to the diplomatic elegance of Allura without viewers noticing it's the same person.
But it's not all big action franchises.
Brooks has maintained a steady presence in children's productions and adult animated series such as The Legend of Vox Machina between 2022 and 2024. Her approach is based on a deep reading of the script before she steps into the booth. That way she avoids the generic intonations that tend to plague low-budget productions.
By 2024, her credits on specialized databases topped 300 official credits across film, television and video games.
