Synopsis of SpongeBob SquarePants

Created by Stephen Hillenburg for Nickelodeon, this animated series follows SpongeBob SquarePants, an energetic and optimistic yellow sea sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea in the fictional city of Bikini Bottom. Accompanied by his pet snail Gary, Bob works as a cook at the Krusty Krab, a fast-food restaurant, and spends his free time catching jellyfish and creating elaborately shaped soap bubbles. His greatest dream is to earn his boating license. His best friend, Patrick Star, is a pink starfish who lives under a rock and thinks he is very smart. Squidward, his neighbor and coworker, is an arrogant, grumpy octopus who hates his job as a cashier. Alongside these aquatic friends, Bob forms an ensemble cast in which his childlike enthusiasm sets the tone for every story.

Trivia about SpongeBob SquarePants

Hillenburg wanted to name the character SpongeBoy, but Nickelodeon's legal department found that the name already had a copyright after the seven-minute pilot was filmed.
To pitch the show to Nickelodeon executives, Hillenburg wore a Hawaiian shirt, brought a terrarium with models of the characters, and played Hawaiian music.
Nickelodeon executives wanted SpongeBob SquarePants to be a schoolboy, but Hillenburg preferred an adult character.
Hillenburg reached out to the band Ween shortly after the release of The Mollusk and asked them for a song, which they sent on Christmas Eve.
Guest cameos include David Bowie, John Goodman, Johnny Depp and Victoria Beckham, who lent their voices to specific characters.
