Mary Jo Catlett never needed an agent chasing magazine covers to make a living. In 1964, she was already in the original Broadway cast of Hello, Dolly!, and that marked the start of a steady run of work in the actors' union.
Theater was his training ground.
There, she learned to project her voice without modern microphones and to keep up the pace of eight shows a week. But television came calling when sitcoms needed faces that could instantly earn the audience's trust.
In 1982, she joined Diff'rent Strokes to play Pearl Gallagher. She came in for season five to fill a logistical gap and ended up staying until the show ended in 1986.
She was paid for a total of 64 episodes in which her character served as the moral anchor for the leads. Her presence on set was a guarantee of professionalism in a production that was starting to show the strain on its child stars.
And the gamble paid off.
Television success in the 1980s gave character actors like her a solid financial foundation for the rest of their careers. In 1994, she worked under John Waters in Serial Mom and proved she could fit into cult cinema as naturally as into the living rooms of middle-class America.
1999 arrived, and with it the casting that would give her a golden retirement. Stephen Hillenburg was looking for a voice with authority but prone to nervous breakdowns for SpongeBob SquarePants.
Catlett became Mrs. Puff and discovered that animated voice work is the most lucrative refuge for California veterans. She has kept this job for more than two decades without having to sit through three-hour makeup sessions.
In 2004, she lent her voice to the first movie in the franchise and reprised the role in the sequels from 2015 and 2020. She records her lines in short sessions, and the character has appeared in more than a hundred episodes of the original series.
But her energy didn't fade with the turn of the century.
In 2013, she appeared in Modern Family, and in 2017 she recorded for 2 Broke Girls. There's no sign of lofty artistic pretensions in her interviews, and she always talks about her work as a matter of craft and punctuality.
Her filmography tops 110 credits across film, television and video games. In 2023, she recorded her last voice performances for the franchise featuring the resident of Bikini Bottom under contract with Nickelodeon.
