Catherine Davis Higgins didn't start out looking for a voice-over microphone. Her initial training was jazz piano at Auburn University. In 1991 she graduated with a specialization that seemed to take her away from the recording studios of California. But the Los Angeles industry had other plans for her voice.
Music was always plan A.
After moving to the West Coast, she worked as a accompanist pianist and backing singer. Her first forays into voice acting were almost accidental. In 1999, she lent her voice to the character Starlight in the series Digimon Adventure. That low-budget contract was the start of a chain of jobs that has kept growing ever since.
In 2005, the role that changed her career came along. She was cast to play Sakura Haruno in the English-language version of Naruto. That production demanded a physical and vocal endurance that Higgins had not experienced in jazz. She recorded hundreds of episodes over more than a decade and kept the character in the sequel Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, which started in 2017.
Higgins avoided being typecast through a very precise breathing technique. In 2014 she took on the challenge of voicing Ami Mizuno (Sailor Mercury) for the redub of Sailor Moon produced by Viz Media. This project aimed for absolute fidelity to the original Japanese material. She brought an intellectual, gentle tone that fans of the franchise immediately embraced.
And the result was massive.
But her technical skill goes beyond reading scripts. In 2017, Nintendo hired her for an unusual role in the video game Super Mario Odyssey. She played Pauline and provided the voice for the main theme, titled Jump Up, Super Star!. The track reached No. 1 in the jazz category on iTunes in several countries and racked up millions of streams on digital platforms.
That recording was a point of connection between her two professional worlds. Higgins had to sing in a big band style she had mastered during her college years. The song was used in the global promotion of the Switch console and generated a commercial impact that voice actors rarely achieve.
Jazz never really left.
Outside the voice booth, Higgins has independently released several studio albums. In 2002 she released The Solid Rock, and in 2008 she presented Bigger than Love. These are Christian and jazz-influenced works in which she handles the piano arrangements herself. She isn't chasing the sales charts with these records. She uses them to keep her instrumental technique sharp.
In 2010 she took over the voice of Tails in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. She kept this role until 2013 in various titles such as Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations. It was a period of heavy technical workload (recording thousands of lines of dialogue for menus and tutorials). Cast changes in these franchises are common due to production decisions. Higgins closed out that chapter without any public conflicts.
The voice-over industry in the United States is governed by very strict union contracts. Higgins has known how to navigate between big-budget projects and niche animated series. In 2024 she remains connected to recordings for the Naruto franchise and takes part in fan conventions around the world. Her name appears in the credits of more than 200 audiovisual productions across film, television and video games.
Her personal discography includes five piano and vocal albums recorded in studios in Nashville and Los Angeles.
