Debi Derryberry doesn't look anywhere near the age of the characters that live in her voice. In 1998, she recorded the pilot for a series about a gifted boy with an impossible pompadour and a robotic dog. That project was titled Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius.
Making the movie 2001 was a technical challenge for its time. Derryberry had to find a tone that sounded smart yet kept the fragility of a ten-year-old kid. That work ended up on the Oscars red carpet.
And the gamble paid off.
Before the world knew her talent for voicing children, Derryberry studied premed at UCLA. But music and the stage mattered more to her than anatomy textbooks. She moved to Nashville to try her luck as a singer and eventually found her place in voice acting after returning to Los Angeles.
In 1988, she landed her first major role in the series Hey Vern, It's Ernest!. It kicked off a run of contracts that led to big productions for Disney and Pixar.
Her work isn't limited to shrill voices. In 1995 she took part in Toy Story, and three years later, in 1998, she voiced several characters in A Bug’s Life. California's animation industry is a closed circle where only those who master breath control survive.
Derryberry controls her breathing so her voice doesn't suffer after eight hours of recording. Because screaming like an alien or crying like a baby drains the vocal cords of any professional.
Many voice actors get typecast.
But she successfully made the jump into anime productions. In 1999 she took on the role of Ryo-Ohki in Tenchi Muyo!, and later voiced Zatch Bell in the series of the same name between 2005 and 2007. American audiences embraced her portrayal of Japanese characters for the natural flow of her emotional transitions.
In 2010 she began her run in the Monster High franchise, bringing Draculaura to life. The change in register was total. She went from the masculine, scientific energy of Neutron to a sweet, teenage tone that she maintained for years across various TV specials.
Her career took a turn when Bill Burr recruited her for the Netflix series F Is for Family. Between 2015 and 2021 she played Maureen Murphy. There was no room for childhood fantasy here. It was a bitter comedy about middle-class America in the 1970s.
Derryberry had to adapt her voice to a script loaded with swearing and suffocating family situations. It was a test of acting endurance.
The video game sector has been her constant refuge.
In 2024, she helped develop Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Her presence in big-budget titles has been constant since she worked on the Crash Bandicoot series, voicing Coco Bandicoot. Recording schedules for video games are shorter, but they demand absolute precision in the audio files.
Derryberry balances recording booth work with training new talent at her Los Angeles studio. In 2016 she published a technical book on the mechanics of professional voice acting. Her method is based on studying child psychology to replicate sounds that don't come across as artificial to the human ear.
The industry values her ability to stay youthful behind the microphone. In 2024 she was still landing streaming platform jobs as often as she did in the nineties. Her longest contract to date lasted more than ten years without interruption.
