Pierre Coffin was born in 1967 under the influence of two worlds. His father was a diplomat, and his mother was the renowned Indonesian writer Nh. Dini. This cultural mix partly explains the linguistic melting pot that would later shape his most profitable creation.
Before setting foot in Hollywood, he attended the Gobelins school in Paris. There he learned that animation was not about drawing well but about understanding movement. In 1993 he worked in London as an animator on Rex: A Dinosaur in New York under the guidance of Steven Spielberg.
And the gamble paid off.
After that period in the UK, he returned to France to work at the Ex Machina studio. There he directed short films and commercials that refined his visual style. In 2003 he premiered the series Pat et Stanley, where his obsession with physical humor and characters with simple shapes was already evident.
Coffin's career changed when Chris Meledandri signed him for Illumination Entertainment. In 2010 he co-directed the film Despicable Me with Chris Renaud. The project had a modest budget by industry standards but managed to gross $543 million worldwide.
No one expected those yellow sidekicks to steal the show.
The creation of the Minions was born out of technical necessity. At first they were an army of muscular men, but the budget did not allow for animating so many human details. Coffin decided to turn them into small capsule-shaped beings with goggles and denim overalls to simplify the process.
But the real discovery was the voice. Coffin couldn't find the right actors to bring those creatures to life in the sound tests. So he recorded a temporary guide himself, mixing words in French, English, Spanish and Italian. The producers decided that no one could do it better than him.
Since then, he has voiced 899 different characters in a single movie.
The franchise's success allowed Coffin to explore his career as a director on a larger scale. In 2013 he released the sequel to the saga, and in 2015 he took charge of Minions. The latter film surpassed the 1,000 million dollar mark at the box office and confirmed that audiences preferred visual slapstick to complex dialogue.
Despite his astronomical figures, he keeps a low profile in the industry. He prefers office work and character design to the noise of red carpets. For him, animation is still a craft for artisans who spend months debating the angle of an eyebrow or the tone of a scream.
In 2024 he returned to directing with Despicable Me 4 after a period focused on production and dubbing. The film used an updated rendering engine to handle the complex textures of the new characters. The final production cost was set at $100 million before marketing.
