Jess Harnell isn't a face people recognize on the street, but her voice has been heard in millions of homes for decades. In 1993, she received a call that changed her career forever. Steven Spielberg was looking for something special for an animated series called Animaniacs.
Harnell walked into the room and channeled the Beatles.
For the role of Wakko Warner, she decided to blend the deadpan of John Lennon with a childlike and somewhat chaotic tone. The result was a massive hit that earned her an Annie Award in 1993. That work set the standard for what the industry expected from a top-tier voice actor.
Before landing at Warner Bros. recording studios, she tried her luck in rock and roll. Her band Loudmouth even signed with a major record label in the nineties. But fate had other plans, far from the stages of massive concerts.
Harnell's ability to modulate her range took her from physical comedy to tougher action films. In 2007, Michael Bay cast her to voice Ironhide in the first installment of Transformers. That giant metal robot needed a gravitas only a veteran could bring.
She reprised the role in the sequels to 2009 and 2011, maintaining her presence in major Hollywood productions. The secret to her longevity lies in a vocal technique that keeps her from wrecking her vocal cords after hours of screaming and guttural sound effects.
The microphone is his natural habitat.
In 1998, she took on the role of announcer for America's Funniest Home Videos. She has held that position for more than twenty-five years, becoming one of the most steady voiceover presences on American television. Producers value her punctuality and her lack of ego on set.
It hasn't all been cartoons and big-budget action films. In 1996, she lent her voice to the video game Crash Bandicoot, playing several supporting characters and enemies. That project sold more than 6 million copies in its first run.
Her work in video games has expanded through appearances in franchises such as Ratchet & Clank or Kingdom Hearts. As a result, her career today is a detailed map of pop culture over the last forty years.
In 2020, she returned to the world of Animaniacs for the series' revival on Hulu. The production ran until 2023, recapturing the satirical spirit of the original. Harnell proved that her take on Wakko was still intact despite the passage of time.
She took part in 2022 in the series The Cuphead Show!, bringing her experience with characters in a classic animation style. Behind the scenes, however, she keeps a low profile and devotes herself to her own music projects whenever her recording schedule allows.
Harnell has logged more than 400 acting credits on industry-specialized websites.
She lives in California and still attends fan conventions, where the lines for her autograph often last several hours. In 2024, she took part in several recording sessions for animation projects that have yet to see the light of day. This professional's average workday usually starts at nine in the morning in a soundproof booth in Burbank.
