Miranda Cosgrove didn't pursue fame on purpose. A talent agent saw her singing and dancing at the Taste of L.A. restaurant when she was just three years old, and her parents took the chance out of sheer curiosity. That led to advertising deals with McDonald's and Mello Yello before the film industry came knocking for real.
In 2003, she played Summer Hathaway in School of Rock. Richard Linklater was looking for a girl who could embody discipline amid the chaos of Jack Black. Cosgrove had to learn to sing badly on purpose for one of the scenes, and that technical challenge was her first major acting lesson. The film grossed $131 million worldwide.
And the gamble paid off.
After filming wrapped, she moved to Nickelodeon to play Megan Parker in Drake & Josh. She was the manipulative younger sister who stole every scene between 2004 and 2007. But network executives knew her potential went beyond a supporting role in someone else's sitcom.
iCarly premiered in 2007, and its concept was ahead of its time. The series explored digital content creation at a moment when YouTube was still in its infancy. Miranda played a teenager who produced her own web show from a penthouse in Seattle. That premise connected with a generation that was just beginning to see the internet as a way of life.
The financial success was massive. In 2010, Cosgrove was earning $180,000 per episode, which put her in the Guinness World Records as the highest-paid child actress on television. But the pace was exhausting. She was filming the series, promoting her album Sparks Fly, and lending her voice to major animated productions all at once.
Because burnout wasn't an option at the peak of her career.
In 2010, she voiced Margo in Despicable Me. The Universal Pictures film became a cornerstone of her career (and her earnings) over the long term. She has kept the role across all the sequels and shorts in the franchise for more than a decade.
Many expected that after the end of her flagship series in 2012, she would jump from one Hollywood project to the next. But she chose to slow down. She enrolled at the University of Southern California to study film, because she wanted to understand the machinery that drives the industry from behind the camera. During those years, her appearances were few and carefully selected.
In 2021, she led the return of iCarly on the Paramount+ platform. This time she wasn't just the star. She served as executive producer and had a say in giving the storylines of the original characters a more mature tone. The series stayed on the air for three seasons until the platform announced its cancellation in 2023.
Her transition to more mature acting was confirmed in 2024.
In May 2024, she starred in the romantic comedy Mother of the Bride on Netflix. She shared the screen with Brooke Shields during a shoot in Phuket, Thailand, directed by Mark Waters. The movie logged 26.7 million full views in its first four days in the platform's global catalog.
