Josh Peck started telling jokes at comedy clubs in New York when he was only eight years old. It was no child's game. His mother took him to venues where smoke and sarcasm were the norm. In 1999, he moved to Los Angeles to work on The Amanda Show, and there began a relationship with Nickelodeon that would last nearly a decade.
Real fame came to him in a sitcom.
The premiere of Drake & Josh in 2004 put him in millions of homes. His role as a clumsy, overweight teenager worked because Peck had a natural comic timing. But behind the TV success was a personal struggle with food and self-image that came to a head in 2006. He lost nearly fifty kilograms between the series' third and fourth seasons.
The industry doesn't always know what to do with a child actor who changes his look. Peck tried to break the mold with The Wackness in 2008. In this independent film, he played a marijuana dealer in 1990s New York. He received good reviews at the Sundance Film Festival. But his phone didn't start ringing off the hook with offers from major studios.
For years, he voiced the possum Eddie in the Ice Age franchise. It was steady work that kept him out of the spotlight while he looked for his place. In 2012, he took part in the new version of Red Dawn, and in 2015 he starred in the series Grandfathered alongside John Stamos. Fox canceled it after just one season.
The internet was his lifeline.
When his film career seemed stalled, Peck threw himself into the Vine app. His six-second videos racked up millions of views. He understood before many actors of his generation that digital attention was a highly valuable currency in Hollywood. That audience later allowed him to publish his memoir Happy People Are Annoying in 2022.
In 2021, he led the revival of Turner & Hooch for Disney Plus. The series didn't make it past its first batch of episodes. But Peck no longer depended on a single hit to stay afloat. He joined the cast of How I Met Your Father in 2022, playing a high school principal. Audiences no longer saw him only as the kid from the jokes.
He has a community of more than 15 million followers across his social profiles. That number gives him a bargaining power many actors his age have lost along the way. Peck learned to manage his own personal brand when nobody in the film industry was talking about algorithms or content monetization.
The year 2023 marked a real change of direction in his career. Christopher Nolan chose him to play Kenneth Bainbridge in Oppenheimer. He's the scientist who presses the button during the Trinity test. Peck appears on screen with no trace of his past in youth television. His sober, restrained performance won over the most demanding critics during awards season.
In 2024, he worked on the film Summer Camp alongside Diane Keaton and Kathy Bates. He still runs his podcast Good Guys with Ben Soffer. Peck earns much of his annual income through social media ad deals and direct sponsorships managed by his own team of agents.
Filming of Oppenheimer cost 100 million dollars, and Peck earned a standard supporting actor fee under SAG-AFTRA union scale.
