Synopsis of The Last of Us

The Last of Us is a post-apocalyptic drama series created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann for HBO, starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. Decades after a massive fungal infection has brought down society and turned its victims into zombie-like creatures, Joel, a middle-aged smuggler, lives in a devastated United States. His job seems simple: smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old teenager, out of a quarantine zone. Ellie is immune to the infection and could be the key to creating a vaccine. For Joel, the journey across the country is also a way of carrying the trauma of his past, while Ellie hides a need to belong that makes her defiant and angry.

Trivia about The Last of Us

Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey were cast as Joel and Ellie on February 10, 2021. Both had appeared in Game of Thrones, but they didn't know each other before filming.

The series averaged nearly 32 million viewers per episode in May and became HBO's most-watched debut season.

The video game's outbreak takes place in 2013, but the writers moved it to 2003 because they felt the events would be more interesting if they lined up with the broadcast.
