Anna Torv landed in Los Angeles with an audition tape recorded in the living room of her home in Australia. It was 2008, and J.J. Abrams was desperately searching for her lead for Fringe. The process moved so fast that within a week the actress went from the calm of Melbourne to the frenetic pace of a $100 million production.
It was a trial by fire.
For five seasons, she played an FBI agent dealing with unexplained phenomena and alternate realities. Filming in Vancouver and later in New York demanded fourteen-hour days under cold, constant lighting. But Torv did not simply fulfill the contract of a network television series. In the second season, she had to play two versions of the same character, changing only her tone of voice and the posture of her shoulders.
And the gamble paid off because audiences accepted the visual trick without the need for costly special effects.
When the series ended in 2013, many analysts expected her to jump straight into a major commercial blockbuster. That didn't happen. She chose to return home and pick her projects carefully, because she preferred creative control to constant exposure on the red carpet. In 2015, she shot The Daughter, and a year later she worked on the political miniseries Secret City, where she played an investigative journalist in Canberra.
Her training at the Australian National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) allowed her to move into far more restrained roles.
In 2017, David Fincher called her for Mindhunter. The director was looking for an actress who could hold the gaze of serial killers without blinking. Torv fit the role of psychologist Wendy Carr, bringing an academic coolness that contrasted with the raw intensity of her castmates. Her contract with Netflix extended until the series was indefinitely canceled in 2020.
In 2021, The Newsreader arrived. Here she played Helen Norville, a news anchor in 1980s Australia who fought the structural sexism of newsrooms. The production required an exhaustive study of the gestures and diction of female news anchors of that era. She won the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for this work.
But the global market soon came calling again.
For 2023, her role in The Last of Us as Tess lasted just two episodes. But her on-screen death became one of the most talked-about moments of the HBO-produced adaptation of the video game. The actress filmed her scenes in the forests of Canada, facing subzero temperatures and long prosthetic makeup sessions.
In 2024, she starred in Territory for Netflix, a drama set on a giant cattle station in the Australian Outback. The production budget topped $30 million and required helicopters and specialists in handling wild cattle. Filming on the first season wrapped after five months of work in remote locations in the Northern Territory.
