Anne Marie Cancelmi was born in Anchorage, but her life has always belonged to New York. Before becoming Annie Parisse, she studied at Fordham University and honed her craft in classical theater. Her entry into the industry was anything but quiet: in 2001, she was already Emmy-nominated for her work on the soap opera As the World Turns.
Many viewers remember her from her time on Law & Order in 2005. She played Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Borgia across 33 episodes of pure procedural intensity. Her exit from the show was one of the most violent and talked-about of that era. The script decided her character would end up suffocated in the trunk of a car.
Television doesn't forgive casting mistakes.
Parisse, however, never got stuck in the type of the serious, distant lawyer. In 2003, she appeared in the romantic comedy How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, and a year later she showed up in La búsqueda alongside Nicolas Cage. Those supporting roles in big Hollywood productions taught her that her place was in the balance between commercial film and Broadway stages.
In 2007, she joined the cast of Tom Stoppard's ambitious theater trilogy The Coast of Utopia. It was a demanding display of physical and mental endurance that ran eight hours in total. That experience changed the way she chose projects. She no longer sought mass exposure but roles with complicated edges that demanded complete control of silence.
And the gamble paid off.
Her arrival on The Following in 2013 marked a return to high-voltage psychological thrillers. She played FBI agent Debra Parker in a storyline centered on violence and cults. Critics praised her ability to stay composed amid the show's chaotic narrative. But her real breakout in natural comedy came with the bittersweet comedy Netflix.
In 2017, she premiered in Friends from College, playing Sam. The series explored the toxic nostalgia of a group of friends approaching forty with more doubts than certainties. Parisse played dry humor and the vulnerability of a woman trapped in an endless romance with Keegan-Michael Key's character with great precision.
Her ability to fit into period stories became clear in 2020 with the miniseries Mrs. America. In this production, she played Midge Costanza and shared scenes with Cate Blanchett in a raw portrait of the fight for the Equal Rights Amendment in the United States. The series' historical accuracy called for a restraint that Parisse masters instinctively.
Not everything has been a mass-audience hit.
In 2018, she starred in The First, a science fiction series about the first crewed mission to Mars. The show was canceled after its first season despite having Sean Penn in the cast. That setback didn't slow her work in independent film. In 2023, she shot Wildcat, directed by Ethan Hawke, a film about writer Flannery O'Connor's life.
Annie Parisse lives in Manhattan with her husband, actor Paul Sparks, and their two children. On the set of Wildcat, the production used 35 Arri Alexa cameras to achieve a visual texture similar to the celluloid of the 1950s. The film's budget did not exceed five million dollars.
