Scott Cohen wasn't chasing fame when he took a supporting role in The Mambo Kings in 1992. This young New Yorker, trained in jazz and classical theater, saw acting as hard, honest work. But the movies have their own plans for certain faces.
His look projects a striking mix of Mediterranean toughness and East Coast elegance. That ambiguity let him move from Broadway stages to television productions without missing a beat. In the '90s, he appeared in stage productions such as Glimmer, Glimmer and Shine and began to get his footing in New York police dramas.
Jazz was his first school.
Before acting, he worked as a professional piano player. That rhythmic discipline shows in the way he delivers dialogue. He doesn't rush his lines. He lets them land with the precision of someone who knows silence matters as much as the word. In 1997, he appeared in Law & Order and proved he could hold his own against industry veterans without flinching.
In 2000, he played Wolf in the fantasy miniseries The 10th Kingdom. It was a risky bet by NBC that blended fairy tales with an almost adult tone. Cohen had to handle a character who was half animal and half hopeless romantic. Those ten high-budget episodes gave him international visibility he had only brushed against until then.
And then the wolf arrived.
Right after, he landed the role that would define his career for mainstream audiences. Between 2000 and 2003, Cohen played Max Medina in Gilmore Girls. He was the literature professor who nearly married the lead character. His chemistry with Lauren Graham was so obvious that the writers had to expand his role beyond what was originally planned.
But Cohen always felt most at home playing complicated men. In 2001, he worked on the film Kissing Jessica Stein, and in 2010 he joined the cast of Love & Other Drugs. He never wanted to be the flavor-of-the-month leading man. He preferred roles where moral conflict outweighed hair and designer wardrobes.
The industry often typecasts actors who succeed on mainstream television. Cohen broke that pattern by taking on radically different projects such as The Americans in 2014 and Billions in 2018. In these series, he stopped being the perfect boyfriend and explored the underworld of power and Cold War espionage.
In 2024, he joined the cast of The Penguin to play Luca Falcone. His role in this HBO Max production marked a return to the dark, criminal tone that has always suited him well. The shoot demanded long makeup sessions and a restrained performance reminiscent of the great supporting actors in the mob films of the '70s.
The gamble paid off.
In 2025, his addition to the cast of the Netflix-produced adaptation of East of Eden was confirmed. The project led by Florence Pugh brought Cohen on for a key role in the family structure of the story. His contract for the series included a full exclusivity clause for the seven months of filming on location in New Zealand.
