The Guy Who Hated the Curl Activator

Eriq La Salle appeared in 1988 with a ridiculous hairstyle in Coming to America. That role, as the heir to a hair-care cosmetics company, gave him visibility but also typecast him in comedy for a while. His training at Juilliard and New York University called for something more serious.

In 1990, he appeared in Jacob's Ladder and began to show that his range was far drier than Hollywood had assumed. He wasn't trying to win over the camera or force a smile to earn sympathy. He acted with a restraint that was almost jarring for the era.

And that was his greatest virtue.

That direct style helped him get on the radar of casting directors in New York. But the real jump in scale came when a script about Chicago doctors landed on his desk. In 1994, the actor accepted the role of Peter Benton in ER.

The Surgeon Who Never Apologized

His character was an arrogant, blunt surgeon with no capacity for social empathy. Benton broke the stereotype of the kind Black doctor that American television had exploited to the point of exhaustion. La Salle insisted that his character be treated with the same toughness as his white colleagues.

In 1999, he asked the writers to end his character's romance with Dr. Corday because he felt the relationship was not organic to the storyline. That decision drew criticism from those who wanted a perfect interracial romantic representation. But he prioritized the coherence of the script over ratings.

He earned 27 million dollars for his last three seasons on the series. He became one of the best-paid actors on television before deciding that his time in the operating room was over. In 2002, he left scripted television to focus on what happened behind the scenes.

Nobody walks away from a check like that without a Plan B.

The Years of Asphalt and Production

In 2002, he left the Chicago hospital drama to try his luck behind the camera. He directed episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and specialized in police dramas where the pace leaves no room for distractions. In 2017, he returned to the big screen in Logan, playing a farmer who crosses Wolverine's path.

It was a brief role, but it carried a gravity that only actors with decades of experience manage to project. In 2022, he signed an exclusivity deal with Universal Television to direct and produce new series under his own banner. This gave him total control over shooting schedules.

He published his suspense novel Laws of Depravity in 2012 and continued the saga with Laws of Wrath in 2023. La Salle now spends much of his day working on the structure of his books before heading into the editing room. His contract with Universal runs through 2025 to develop procedural genre projects.
