Synopsis of ER

ER is set in the emergency room of County General Hospital, a fictional center in Cook County, Chicago, Illinois. A team of doctors and nurses works there, treating critically ill patients with little time to spare. The initial cast includes Dr. Mark Greene, played by Anthony Edwards, Dr. Doug Ross, played by George Clooney, Dr. Susan Lewis, played by Sherry Stringfield, and medical student John Carter, played by Noah Wyle. Amid urgent cases, each character carries professional, ethical and personal conflicts that intersect with their daily work. The series shows how these professionals try to save lives while managing their own, in an environment where decisions are made in minutes. Created by novelist Michael Crichton, it airs on NBC.

Trivia about ER

Spielberg bought the ER script in 1989 with the intention of turning it into a feature film. Years later, in October 1993, Crichton and he discussed making a television series.

The pilot episode was shot in a hospital that was no longer operating, because there was no time or money to build a set. It was the former Linda Vista Hospital in Los Angeles.

Between the fourth and sixth seasons, each episode of ER cost a record 13 million dollars, according to the same paragraph of the source.

The episode "Hell and High Water" drew the series' highest ratings, with 48 million viewers and a 45% market share.

ER earned 124 Emmy Award nominations, more than any other series in the history of the awards.

In January 2009, NBC extended the final season by three episodes, to 22, as part of a deal to launch a new series from John Wells.

In 2020, there was an effort to revive "ER" with Noah Wyle, John Wells and R. Scott Gemmill, but the project did not move forward due to difficulties reaching an agreement with Michael Crichton's estate; they later developed "The Pitt."

In 1995, "ER" won eight Emmy Awards in a single ceremony, matching the record that "Hill Street Blues" had set in 1981.
