John Stamos wasn't always the guy with the perfect hair and the guitar over his shoulder. In 1982, he joined the set of General Hospital to play Blackie Parrish, and his life changed with a television contract. He was a California kid who helped out at his father's fast-food business before the cameras first picked him up.
That first role earned him a daytime Emmy nomination in 1983. But the real media explosion came when he accepted the role of Jesse Katsopolis on Full House. The show premiered in 1987 and ran for eight consecutive seasons on ABC.
Jesse's character was originally designed as a rebel without a cause inspired by Elvis Presley. But his chemistry with the Olsen twins turned the rocker into a model of alternative fatherhood in the late eighties. Stamos was commanding fees by then that started to leave Los Angeles agents dizzy.
And the gamble paid off.
Many people forget that his music career has run parallel to his acting for decades. In 1985, he began playing drums with The Beach Boys on and off. His command of percussion allowed him to tour the world with the band for years as a full-fledged member of the lineup.
After his big sitcom ended in 1995, he tried to move away from his image as a family heartthrob. He appeared in stage productions such as How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Cabaret. The stage became his refuge for earning credibility with New York critics.
In 2005, he joined the cast of ER to play Dr. Tony Gates. Taking on a medical drama so mature was a risky move, but his run lasted until the show's final season in 2009. He racked up more than 60 episodes on one of the most-watched series in American television history.
But the past always comes back.
Nostalgia sold big during the 2010s. In 2016, he produced and starred in the revival of his most famous series, titled Fuller House for Netflix. The project ran for five seasons and was used to wrap up storylines left open twenty years earlier.
From 2021 to 2022, he led the cast of Big Shot on Disney+. He played a basketball coach with a temper problem who ends up coaching a girls' team at an elite high school. The series was canceled after two seasons due to the company's global budget cuts.
In October 2023, he published his memoir, titled If You Would Have Told Me. In its pages, he recounts his struggles with alcohol and the complicated relationship he had with his ex-wife Rebecca Romijn. The book debuted on the New York Times Best Sellers list during its first week in U.S. bookstores.
Stamos lives in a Spanish-style property in Beverly Hills valued at several million dollars.
