Bob Saget died alone in room 901 at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Orlando. It was January 9, 2022, and he had just performed a two-hour stand-up show at a nearby theater. That abrupt, accidental ending closed the story of a man who spent half his life trying to make the public forget that he was America's perfect dad.
Duality was his driving force.
His early years in Philadelphia gave no hint that he would end up wiping countertops in a sitcom. In 1977 he won a student academy award for a documentary about a nephew who needed reconstructive surgery. That was serious, raw filmmaking. But live comedy called to him more strongly, and he ended up working the clubs of Los Angeles in the early 1980s with an aggressive style that bordered on the scatological.
In 1987, ABC was looking for a harmless profile to star in Full House. Saget accepted the role of Danny Tanner, and audiences embraced him as the ideal widower raising three daughters with endless patience. The show ran for eight seasons and 192 episodes. The pay per episode reached astronomical figures for the era and gave him the financial security that would later let him take bigger risks.
And that's how it went for nearly a decade.
While filming those wholesome family scenes, the actor kept taking the stage at night to tell jokes that would have horrified his bosses. He juggled his acting work with hosting America's Funniest Home Videos between 1989 and 1997. That home-video show was a massive ratings hit that cemented his image as the nice guy for all audiences.
Because Saget never wanted to be just the guy giving advice in the living room of a San Francisco house.
The release of the documentary The Aristocrats in 2005 was when audiences got to see his true colors. His take on a forbidden joke was so extreme that it went viral at a time when the internet was starting to change the rules of the game. It was no miscalculation. It was a statement of intent: shaking off the dust of family television.
That same year he began voicing the adult Ted Mosby in How I Met Your Mother. It was a steady voice-over job that lasted until 2014. He never appeared on screen during those nine seasons, but his calm tone became the thread that tied the story together. He was paid for each line without ever having to set foot in the makeup room.
In 2016 he returned to his most famous role with the premiere of Fuller House on Netflix. The show ran until 2020 and helped close a professional chapter with the original cast. During those years he also directed the film Benjamin in 2019 and kept up a interview podcast where he blended dark humor with a vulnerability that surprised his colleagues.
The autopsy confirmed that he died of a head injury after accidentally striking his head on the bedframe. His remains rest at Mount Sinai Memorial Park cemetery in Los Angeles. At the time of his death, his net worth was estimated at $50 million.
