Brooke Shields earned her first advertising paycheck at eleven months old. That was the start of a commercial machine that never fully stopped. In 1978, director Louis Malle put her in front of the camera in Pretty Baby, playing a girl who lived in a New Orleans brothel. The controversy was immediate, but so was the money.
That role placed her at the center of a debate about child exploitation that still generates academic articles today. The film cost $2.5 million and grossed almost three times that despite exhibition restrictions. And she was barely twelve years old.
In 1980, The Blue Lagoon hit theaters. The film grossed more than 58 million dollars in the United States alone. Audiences bought the fantasy of lost innocence on a desert island. But the technical reality was different: the producers had to glue the actress's hair to her body to prevent accidental nudity on screen.
That same year, Richard Avedon photographed her for the Calvin Klein jeans campaign. The tagline about what came between her and her jeans sparked a wave of censorship at the ABC and CBS television networks. Brand sales rose 300% within a few months.
Shields's face was everywhere.
But Shields decided fame wasn't enough. In 1983, she enrolled at Princeton University to study French literature. Hollywood agents thought it was career suicide. She spent four years away from the spotlight while writing a thesis on the work of Colette.
Making a comeback was not easy.
The industry saw her as a pretty face on a poster rather than an actress with comedic range. In 1996, she landed the lead role in the series Suddenly Susan. The show ran for 93 episodes and earned her two Golden Globe nominations. It was the moment she proved she could carry a weekly sitcom in front of millions of viewers.
In 2005, she published Down Came the Rain. In the book, she described her experience with postpartum depression and the use of medication to overcome it. Tom Cruise publicly criticized her, claiming psychiatry was a pseudoscience. Shields responded directly in a New York Times column, defending women's right to seek medical help.
That confrontation ended with a private apology from the actor a year later.
Shields's career in the twenty-first century has centered on television and Broadway theater. In 2008, she starred in Lipstick Jungle, and in 2021 she led the cast of the romantic comedy A Castle for Christmas. In 2024, she also appeared in the film Mother of the Bride for a streaming platform.
In May 2024, the actress was elected president of the Actors’ Equity Association. The union represents more than 51,000 professionals in theater across the United States. Her term focuses on improving working conditions and minimum wages in regional productions.
The annual budget of the organization she now leads exceeds 7 million dollars.
