James Adam Belushi was born in Chicago in 1954 to a family of Albanian immigrants. He is not the self-destructive genius his older brother was. He is the man who stayed behind to pick up the pieces and build a career based on grit and commercial instinct.
His arrival on Saturday Night Live in 1983 was a suicidal move, since John's shadow still loomed over the halls of NBC. But Jim had a different style (more down-to-earth and less chaotic) that let him last two seasons on the show. There, he realized his place was not in impersonation but in dry comebacks.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1981, he made his film debut in Thief under the direction of Michael Mann. It was a supporting role, but enough for the industry to see him as a character actor capable of holding his own against big names. During the 1980s, he took on a string of projects that played up his everyday-guy look caught in trouble.
In 1986, he shot About Last Night, and two years later he got his big break in action movies. In 1988, he starred in Red Heat alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger. He earned one million dollars for playing police officer James Danko. That contract put him in a salary bracket that few supporting actors reached at the time.
The 1990s were a roller coaster of financial and artistic decisions. In 1991, he starred in Curly Sue (the last film directed by John Hughes), and the movie grossed more than 80 million dollars despite poor reviews. Jim specialized in family comedies and cop movies with dogs that filled video store shelves.
But the real stroke of luck came with television. In 2001, he premiered the sitcom According to Jim on ABC. The series stayed on the air for eight seasons and 182 episodes. It was a massive ratings hit that specialist critics consistently dismissed for its conventional humor.
Money doesn't care about reviews.
Thanks to the syndication rights for that series, the actor secured a golden retirement long before turning sixty. In 2011, he tried his luck on Broadway in the play Born Yesterday, where he received positive reviews for his performance as Harry Brock. It was an attempt to regain his acting credibility after years of cheap jokes on television.
In 2015, his life took a logistical turn when he bought a property in Oregon. He decided to devote himself to legal cannabis cultivation and founded Belushi’s Farm in the Rogue River Valley. It was no Hollywood star's whim, since he personally got involved in the irrigation and harvesting processes on the farm.
In 2017, David Lynch brought him back for the return of Twin Peaks. He played Bradley Mitchum and showed that his gift for drama remained intact beneath the comic surface. That same year, he worked with Woody Allen on Wonder Wheel, where he shared the bill with Kate Winslet.
He still performs with The Blues Brothers alongside Dan Aykroyd at select events. In 2020, he premiered the reality series Growing Belushi, which showed how his farming business works. The show was filmed entirely on his 37 hectares of land in Eagle Point.
