An unnamed ghostwriter is hired by a London publisher to finish the memoirs of Adam Lang, a former British prime minister. The job was left unfinished by a collaborator who died under mysterious circumstances. The pay is generous and the manuscript seems straightforward, so the protagonist decides not to dwell too much on that death. He travels to Martha's Vineyard, an island off the coast of Massachusetts, where Lang lives with his wife, Ruth, and Amelia Bly, his personal assistant. The house is isolated, surrounded by beach and a wintry sea, and the writer shuts himself away to work within its walls. Roman Polanski directs the film. Ewan McGregor plays the writer and Pierce Brosnan plays Lang.

[To Rycart on television] You cheeky fuck!
He was having dinner with the Vice President. That bloody Bly woman wouldn't even give him the phone. Oh, God. Oh, dear God. What's he got himself mixed up in? [Starts to sob]
And you're a Brit. The ghost should be a Brit. [Mimics English accent] To get the jolly old tone right, right?
[Reacting to an old picture of Lang, taken in his college days with a marijuana joint] Let's hope he didn't inhale.
[At Rhinehart publishing house security check] Who are you expecting to bomb you, Random House?
You name it, he ghosts it.
