Synopsis of Monster: The Ed Gein Story

Set in Plainfield, Wisconsin, during the 1950s, the series follows Ed Gein, a friendly man who lives isolated on a rundown farm. Charlie Hunnam plays this recluse, whose loneliness mixes with an unhealthy obsession with his mother and a psychological decline that accelerates unchecked. The story alternates between Ed's everyday life and the works of fiction that were eventually inspired by him, and from that contrast emerges a reflection on how the public consumes true crime stories. Ian Brennan created this installment of the Monster anthology, produced for Netflix. The conflict arises from the tension between the real man hidden behind the myth and the spectacle surrounding him.

«Before The Texas Chainsaw Massacre... there was Ed.»

Trivia about Monster: The Ed Gein Story

The season debuted at number two on Netflix's global weekly chart with 12.2 million views in its first three days.

In its second week it reached the number one spot worldwide with 20.7 million views, surpassing the 19.5 million record of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.

The season received seven nominations at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, and Charlie Hunnam was also nominated for a Golden Globe.

According to reports in February 2025, filming for the season was underway in Chicago.

The working title was The Original Monster, with the idea of exploring Ed Gein as the first "celebrity serial killer."

Charlie Hunnam lost more than 13 kilos to physically approximate Ed Gein's build and studied a rare recording of his voice to prepare for the role.

Hunnam stayed in character during filming and worked between 14 and 16 hours a day before going home to keep reading the script.

Tom Hollander plays Alfred Hitchcock, and Olivia Williams plays Alma Reville, linking the season to the creation and legacy of Psycho.
