Laurie Metcalf doesn't rehearse to seek the audience's approval. In 1976, she co-founded the Steppenwolf company in the basement of a church in Highland Park with Gary Sinise and John Malkovich. That training defined a visceral style of acting that Chicago had never seen before.

But national television took a decade to figure out what to do with the nervous energy she gave off on stage.

In 1988, she took on the role of Jackie Harris in the sitcom Roseanne. She won three consecutive Emmy Awards between 1992 and 1994 for playing a woman full of insecurities and mood swings.

That's how she became the most profitable supporting actress in the industry.

Film often used her as a precision tool. In 1991, she played an investigator in JFK, and in 1997 she was the killer of Scream 2. She accepted supporting roles because her priority remained the New York stage.

Refuge on stage and a return to the living room

She won her first Tony Award in 2017 for A Doll's House, Part 2. A year later, she repeated the win with Three Tall Women. Her technique is based on absolute body control and an almost mathematical sense of comic timing.

Theater is her natural habitat.

In 2017, the film Lady Bird brought her back to the forefront of mainstream cinema. Her role as an exhausted mother earned her an Oscar nomination and more than thirty critics' awards in a single season. Still, she preferred to return quickly to the multi-camera sets of television.

In 2018, she revisited her most famous character in the revival of Roseanne (which was soon renamed The Conners). In 2022, she joined the series Hacks as a relentless tour manager named Weed.

The discipline of the invisible method

For 2025, she is scheduled to star in The Way Things Were. She still keeps a work routine that avoids social events and long interviews. Her name appears in the credits of more than seventy productions across film and television.

Because Metcalf treats acting as a craft with no mystique.

The contract for the eighth season of The Conners was signed under strict production clauses that limit filming days to four days per week.
