The firing that built an empire

John Lasseter was fired from Disney in 1983 for arguing that the future of animation lay in computers. His bosses at the time didn't see the big picture and preferred the safety of traditional pencil drawing. That slammed door was the true beginning of Pixar.

In those years the technology was clunky, and renders took forever to complete. But Lasseter soon understood that the key lay not in the software but in the artist's eye.

In 1995 Toy Story premiered after a grueling production process that nearly brought the studio down. It was the first feature film made entirely on computers, and it grossed 373 million dollars worldwide.

And the gamble paid off.

The man who rescued Mickey

When Disney bought Pixar in 2006 for 7,400 million dollars, the balance of power shifted completely. Lasseter took over creative direction of both studios and applied his philosophy of technical transparency.

Under his leadership, traditional animation returned with The Princess and the Frog in 2009. But his greatest achievement during that period was overseeing the development of Frozen, which broke every box office record known up to that point in 2013.

His method was to put the script ahead of the visual fireworks. For him, a good story could survive bad animation, but perfect animation could never save a mediocre script.

And then the shadows arrived.

In 2017, his career suffered a definitive setback at the Mouse House. Accusations about his behavior in the workplace forced his official departure a year later. He left behind decades of absolute control over Hollywood's animated storytelling.

The rebuilding in Madrid

Skydance Animation signed him in 2019 to build a studio from scratch with locations in Madrid and Los Angeles. It was a move that shook the industry and sparked internal protests at David Ellison's company.

The first major result of this new chapter was Luck in 2022. The film was produced with an international team and served to test Lasseter's ability outside the Disney umbrella.

In 2024, he produced Spellbound for the Netflix platform. The work plan for 2025 includes the release of Pookoo and the consolidation of a production line that employs hundreds of animators on Spanish soil.

Investing in European talent remains the cornerstone of its market strategy for the next decade. In 2026 the studio plans to deliver its fourth feature film under this external management model.
