The method of disappearing

Kevin Spacey Fowler grew up in a home where books and discipline weighed more than affection. His father was a data technician with Nazi sympathies, which shaped the withdrawn character of a boy who soon found imitation to be his best defense. Before becoming a star, he spent years honing his craft in New York theater under the watchful eye of mentors like José Ferrer.

In 1982 he made his Broadway debut in a version of Ibsen's Ghosts. But 1980s cinema didn't quite know what to do with that office-worker face capable of hiding a volcano. He didn't fit the leading-man profile or the comic supporting-actor mold. So he waited, accumulating small roles in films such as Working Girl.

And his patience paid off in the mid-1990s.

In 1995 the release of The Usual Suspects definitively launched his career. His performance as Verbal Kint earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and fixed in audiences' minds his talent for quiet manipulation. Because Spacey was always better at suggesting than shouting. That same year he shot Seven and insisted that his name not appear in the opening credits so as not to spoil the ending's surprise.

He was the most feared villain of his generation.

Conquering London and political power

Despite winning his second Oscar in 1999 for American Beauty, the actor chose to step away from the noise of Los Angeles. In 2003 he accepted the position of artistic director of the Old Vic theater in London. It was a decision that baffled his agents. Over ten years, he revived an institution that was in ruins and committed to bringing classic productions to young audiences at affordable prices.

But television came knocking with an offer he couldn't refuse. In 2013 Netflix premiered House of Cards, and the character Frank Underwood became a global phenomenon. The series was the platform's first major bet on original content. Spacey earned $500,000 per episode during the first seasons and held significant executive producing control.

Everything seemed under control until his past caught up with him.

In October 2017, sexual harassment allegations against him brought the industry to a standstill. Netflix swiftly fired him from its flagship series, and Ridley Scott decided to remove him from All the Money in the World after it was already finished. The studio spent millions reshooting his scenes with Christopher Plummer in record time to meet the December release.

The legal maze and the fringe comeback

The following years became a constant parade through the courts of London and the United States. In 2022 a New York jury rejected a $ 40 million civil lawsuit filed against him. A year later, in July 2023, a British court found him not guilty of nine counts of sexual assault after a trial that lasted several weeks.

Despite his legal acquittals, the major studio system shut its doors on him. In 2022 he appeared in the Italian film L’uomo che disegnò Dio, directed by Franco Nero. It was his first on-screen work after the forced hiatus caused by the legal proceedings. But the shoot was handled discreetly and without the media coverage of his earlier big hits.

In 2024 he voiced a character in the independent thriller Control. The production had no backing from any major distributor and was funded with private capital outside the Hollywood system. The recording contract was closed for a sum well below his usual fee from the previous decade.
