Chris Cooper wasn't born on a television set. He grew up on a cattle ranch in Kansas and spent years doing hard labor in construction before the industry took notice of him. In 1987, he made his debut in Matewan under the direction of John Sayles.
He was 36 years old.
That role as a union miner marked the start of a professional relationship with Sayles that would last for decades. Cooper was never the actor chasing magazine covers. Before reaching Hollywood, he studied agriculture at the University of Missouri.
That restraint of the countryside shows in every one of his gestures. His face looks carved from granite, and his silences often say more than his co-stars' dialogue. But it wasn't until the late nineties that his name started to come up in the offices of major producers.
His mass recognition came when he played Colonel Fitts in American Beauty in 1999. That role as a repressed, violent military man put him on the radar of major studios in Los Angeles. But it was in 2002 that the Academy bowed to him for his work in Adaptation.
Won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for playing John Laroche.
For that role he had to transform into a toothless man obsessed with flowers. He did it without relying on the usual tricks of method actors. He simply disappeared into the character while sharing scenes with Meryl Streep.
The industry tried to typecast him in authority roles.
He accepted some roles but always looked for the crack in the system. In 2003, he appeared in Seabiscuit, and in 2005 he delivered a masterclass in restraint in Capote. For Cooper, acting isn't about shouting but about watching the world fall apart around you.
In 2005, Cooper's personal life came to a halt with the death of his son Jesse. The young man had suffered from cerebral palsy since birth, and the actor had always adjusted his shoots so he wouldn't be far from his home in Massachusetts. That loss hardened his gaze and made him far more selective about his appearances.
In 2010, he appeared in The Town in a brief but devastating role. In 2019, he worked on the version of Little Women directed by Greta Gerwig. There, he played Mr. Laurence with a fragility few expected from a man of his physical presence.
And the gamble paid off.
His ability to convey pain without shedding a tear has kept him relevant without big marketing campaigns. In 2020 he starred in Irresistible under Jon Stewart's direction. In 2023 he joined the cast of Boston Strangler, playing Jack MacLaine in a production shot entirely on location in Massachusetts with an estimated budget of 50 million dollars.
