A burning boat in the port of San Pedro, in Los Angeles, has left 27 people dead. U.S. Customs agent Dave Kujan, played by Chazz Palminteri, arrives in the city to clear up what happened, but he has almost no witnesses. One of them is Roger "Verbal" Kint, a small-time con artist with a limp who survived the massacre. Kujan questions him in a borrowed police office with one goal: to find out what happened on that boat. Verbal agrees to talk, but he doesn't start with the fire. He wants to go back to what happened weeks earlier in New York, and his story gets more tangled as it goes on.
