Calogero Palminteri had 160 dollars in his bank account when he turned down a million-dollar check for the rights to his stage play. It was 1989, and the actor was struggling, working at the door of a nightclub in Los Angeles. The studio wanted the story of his childhood in the Bronx but didn't want him as the lead.
He said no.
That suicidal refusal defined his career in the industry. Palminteri knew that if he sold the script for A Bronx Tale without reserving the role of Sonny, he would end up as just another extra in his own story. Robert De Niro showed up at the theater one night and promised that if they signed together, he would direct the film and Chazz would be the star.
And that's how one of the most profitable partnerships in New York crime cinema was born.
After the impact of his debut as a screenwriter, the phone began ringing with offers from top directors. In 1994, Woody Allen called him to play Cheech in Bullets Over Broadway. The role of a gangster who turns out to be a playwriting genius earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Before accepting the role, he read the script three times in a row. But the real key to his success was his ability to humanize street thugs without falling into parody. In 1995, he took part in The Usual Suspects, bringing to life Agent Dave Kujan. The film won two Oscars, and he firmly established himself in the public imagination as a psychological thriller figure.
Audiences no longer saw a nightclub bouncer.
In the years that followed, his presence became constant in crime-genre productions. In 1996 he shot Mulholland Falls, and in 1999 he shared the screen with Robert De Niro again in the comedy Analyze This. His deep voice and striking features led him into voice acting in 2002 with the animated film Stuart Little 2.
With the arrival of the new century, the actor diversified his interests toward television and business management. In 2010, he began a recurring role on Modern Family, playing Shorty, Jay Pritchett's best friend. Palminteri has always known how to laugh at his own tough-guy image when the script called for it.
He opened his own restaurant in New York City in 2015.
In 2019, he joined the cast of Godfather of Harlem to play mob boss Joe Bonanno. The series stayed on the air for several seasons, and in 2022 he took part in The Offer, the production that tells the story of the struggles behind making The Godfather. In 2023, he shot several episodes of the series Gravesend, staying true to his connection with Italian American family stories.
The distribution contract for his restaurant Chazz Palminteri Italian Restaurant on 46 Street in Manhattan includes a specific clause on the supply of flour imported directly from Italy.
