Robert Davi didn't ask permission to enter the movie business. He made his debut alongside Frank Sinatra in the TV movie Contract on Cherry Street in 1977. It was no coincidence. The New York-born actor brought with him a classical training under Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg that let him hold his own with any star.

His face doesn't fool anyone. The marks on his skin (the result of severe acne during adolescence) gave him a texture that casting directors in the 1980s desperately sought. Davi wasn't the catalog leading man. He was the man who could kill you or sing you a ballad with the same absolute conviction.

Davi understood that his look was his contract.

In 1985, he played Jake Fratelli in The Goonies. It was the starting point for a run in which the actor specialized in tough guys with nuance. But he didn't stop at the simple neighborhood thug. His technique gave an unusual depth to characters who were flat on the page.

The villain who humanized the threat

Hollywood typecast him quickly, but he knew how to make the most of the shadows. In 1988 he appeared in Die Hard as Special Agent Johnson. His role worked as a scathing critique of federal authority. So when the chance came to play James Bond's villain in Licence to Kill (1989), the actor was already ready.

His Franz Sanchez wasn't the typical evil genius with plans for world domination. He was a drug trafficker with a twisted and violent code of loyalty. Davi brought a dangerous elegance that few villains in the Bond franchise have managed to match. The character didn't want to destroy the world. He just wanted no one to betray him.

And the public bought it.

After his success in the late eighties, the actor kept a steady pace of work. He appeared in TV series such as Profiler between 1996 and 2000. There, he played FBI agent Bailey Malone. It was a necessary change of pace to move away from purely criminal roles and show he could carry the weight of a procedural plot.

The voice behind the tough-guy mask

Few people know that before stepping onto a film set, Davi studied opera. His passion for music never fully disappeared. In 2011, he recorded the album Davi Sings Sinatra: On the Road to Jacky Gleason at Capitol Studios in Hollywood. It wasn't a celebrity's whim. The album reached the top spots on Billboard's jazz charts.

That musical side allowed him to direct his own feature film in 2007. The movie was titled The Dukes. It follows a band trying to win back lost glory in a world that no longer recognizes them. It was a personal project he financed after years of earning paychecks from low-budget commercial productions.

Davi never stopped working.

In 2024, he took part in the filming of Reagan, where he played Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. That same year, he also joined the cast of the series Paper Empire. His name keeps appearing in the credits of three or four productions a year without the need for big marketing campaigns.

Most of his current contracts are signed under independent production terms. Filming his scenes for the biographical drama about Donald Trump titled The Apprentice was completed in just two weeks during the spring of 2024. His daily pay remains one of the most stable for an actor of his standing in the American market.
