Ohio's most unsettling smile

Ray Wise doesn't need to raise his voice for viewers to feel a twinge of unease in their stomach. All he needs is a fixed stare and lips stretched until the expression looks like a wax mask. He is the face of the polite nightmare.

Although the general public irrevocably associates him with the tragedy of Twin Peaks, his career began long before David Lynch set out to unsettle the world. Wise was born in Akron, Ohio, in 1947 and honed his craft in university theater before taking on the pavement of New York. There he discovered that his square jaw and perfectly groomed hair fit the television standards of the era.

No one smiles like him.

Between 1970 and 1976, he played Jamie Rollins in the soap opera Love of Life. It was a grueling test of endurance that required him to shoot hundreds of hours in front of the cameras without losing his composure. But genre cinema came knocking in 1982 with Swamp Thing, where he worked under the direction of Wes Craven. That film was the first sign that his look worked especially well in stories where reality bends.

The man in the gray suit and the cold blood

In 1987, he played Leon Nash in RoboCop. His role as one of Clarence Boddicker's henchmen is a lesson in how to stand out in a cast full of over-the-top villains. Wise brought a corporate coldness that contrasted with the industrial grime of Paul Verhoeven's Detroit.

And then 1990 arrived.

When David Lynch cast him as Leland Palmer, the father of the murdered girl in Twin Peaks, the actor had no idea he was about to star in one of the most raw descents into hell in television. Wise went from grieving father to a man possessed by utter horror. That performance changed how television portrayed trauma, and he had to dye his hair white during filming to reflect the character's psychological toll.

But the show's success did not pigeonhole him into pure drama. Wise quickly realized his look also worked for dark comedy and satirical horror. In 1992, he reunited with Lynch for the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, where he pushed his character's intensity to limits few actors dare to explore on a film set.

The longevity of a character actor

Unlike other actors of his generation, Wise never stopped working for lack of offers. In 2003, he faced the monster in Jeepers Creepers 2, playing Jack Taggart Sr., a farmer obsessed with revenge. It was a physically demanding role that proved he could still carry the weight of an action production with special effects at age 56.

The pace didn't slow in the following decades. In 2007, he accepted the role of the Devil in the series Reaper, and his performance was so charismatic that it overshadowed the young leads. Wise moved across the set with a feline elegance reminiscent of the golden age of Hollywood classics. His ability to switch between terror and parody led him to projects like Fresh Off the Boat, where, between 2015 and 2020, he played Marvin with flawless comic flair.

There is no sign of fatigue in his profile.

In 2014, he joined the cast of the legendary daytime drama The Young and the Restless to play Ian Ward. He received a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Performer for this role in 2015. Wise continues to rack up credits in independent productions and lends his voice to animated projects and big-budget video games.

In 2023, he took part in the shoot for the film The Blue Rose, directed by George Baron. He has now accumulated more than 250 acting credits, according to official records from the American actors' unions. His contract for his most recent collaboration on an animated television series in 2024 included a confidentiality clause about the number of episodes recorded.
