Synopsis of Fresh Off the Boat

The Taiwanese-American Huang family lives in Washington, D.C.'s Chinatown, but in 1995 they move to Orlando, Florida, to open a cowboy-themed restaurant. Louis, the father, embraces the American dream and believes the business will be the opportunity the family needs. Jessica, the mother, is a demanding and competitive woman who faces cultural clashes with a Florida community with very few Asian residents. Eddie, the eldest son, a fan of hip hop and basketball, has to find his place at a school where he feels out of place. Created by Nahnatchka Khan and aired on ABC, the series stars Randall Park, Constance Wu and Hudson Yang.

Trivia about Fresh Off the Boat

The series was called Far East Orlando during development. Eddie Huang led a Twitter campaign to change the title to that of his memoir.

The first of the two preview episodes drew 7.94 million viewers and became the second-highest-rated comedy premiere of that season.

Although it is set in Orlando, the series was mostly filmed on Stage 14 at 20th Century Fox in Century City, Los Angeles.

In April 2019, the series aired its episode 100 and became the first show with a fully Asian American cast to reach that milestone.

TVLine named Constance Wu Performer of the Week on February 14, 2015, for their performance in the third episode of the first season.

In November 2019, ABC announced that the sixth season would be the last and cut it to 15 episodes, with a one-hour series finale scheduled for February 21, 2020.

The proposed spin-off, titled "Magic Motor Inn," would have followed the characters played by Preity Zinta and Vir Das, but ABC Entertainment's president said in June 2020 that it probably would not be made.

The series received 28 nominations across various awards and won six, including honors for its young cast and youth performances.
