Synopsis of Wilfred

Ryan Newman is a young lawyer who can't get ahead in life and lives in a deep depression in California. His new neighbor, Jenna, asks him to look after her dog during the day. Ryan is the only one who sees Wilfred as a man in a dog costume, while to everyone else he is an ordinary dog. Wilfred is rude, pushy and a bad influence, pushing Ryan to do things he would never dare to do. The series asks whether this strange companion can help him find meaning in his life or will only get him into trouble. It airs on FX and is an American adaptation of the Australian comedy of the same name, starring Elijah Wood and Jason Gann.

Trivia about Wilfred

Unlike the Australian version, which was split equally between Wilfred, its owner and her boyfriend, the American version is presented as a buddy comedy between Wilfred and Ryan.

The first season was shot with a Canon 7D DSLR camera, using a three-camera setup. The following seasons were filmed with a Nikon D800.

The series premiere was the highest-rated comedy debut in FX Networks history, and it remained among the top ten most-watched Thursday night cable shows during its first season.

Gann suggested that the series struggled in ratings in the United States partly because it got tangled up in its mythology and pushed the comedy into the background.

The producer of the Australian series, Renegade Film, failed to sell the original version to any other country, so Gann created a new series for the United States.

Fiona Gubelmann said that when they learned they had landed the role of Jenna, they fell to the floor in shock; it was their first leading role on television.

The fourth season was moved from FX to FXX and was announced as the last, following the renewal of the series for that final run.

The series won an award from the American Society of Cinematographers and another from the Guild of Music Supervisors, as well as a nomination at the Satellite Awards.
